LOL, Not trying to offend anyone, but that is some real hillbilly engineered wrench. I love it. I wonder if you made it a little more sight friendly if there would be a market for a specialized wrench like that. Someone might be sitting on a million dollar idea there...........

Update on orginal Post. Fuel changed out, 1 1/4" wrench on banjo nut worked fine, although getting everything back together was time consuming. I don't know if they could cram any more in there.

Thanks for all the help.
FYI- After the change truck has no leaks and seems to even start better.

They can cram A LOT more in there. Look at a Cali model truck. Then be glad that you whizzed thru your pump as fast as you did....LOL

fuel pump removal

for some reason i can't find my thread of posts...

anyway...

i'm removing my fuel pump finally.....

i have the bolts removed and am now trying to remove it.....it only want to wiggle a little and it maybe about 1/4 inch 'loose'....and that's all i can get!!!

i'm not smart enought to know how to 'manually' turn the motor, so i did bump the motor with the key to get the tappet to pop it up, but i'm not sure if it actually worked. i've been wiggling it for a while now and seem to be getting no where!

do i need to abuse it to get it out??

one problem(at least)...i did not remove the filter housing...i cannot get the bolts loosened. so i have the fuel lines removed other than the small one at the bottom of the pump...i'm not sure if this is why it won't budge.....??

i was thinking of cutting it, but i have to leave it there since i cannot get the filter housing off.

uugghhh!!

shoulda just spend the extra money to get someone to do it i guess......

any help/suggestions would be appreciated

you need to take the filter housing off. then you can get a pry bar in there. Cut the hose and get the filter housing out. You will have a very very hard time getting it back together if you leave the filter housing in anyway.

fuel pump removal

just had to put my left nut into it i guess...wow..and both into the second one.

anyway...just came right out after took the bolts out and cut the bottom line away.

now the fun part of putting it all back together!

oh...there's some white 'lube' on the tappet(new one)...does this need to be cleaned off? or does it matter?

thanks

fuel pump replacement

my valley of death was a valley of life!!
there was a freaking huge 'nest' that some mice made in there..under the filter housing! got those from michigan...might have been a home for a week or so...anywho..

removed the pump...didn't find any banjo washers....not on the pump or the bolt..or in the valley...

there's two in the set of 'gaskets' purchased from ford.....do i put both of them on? i don't remember reading about the washers..just thought it said put the washer(s) on...kinda tricky to put on without them falling off or something along those lines.

fuel pump replacement

correction from my above..........

i didn't look at the part the bolt actually mates...so the two in the package go on both sides of 'this'(the dilio that has the metal lines going to it)??

and, i noticed there is a red mark on the bolt and it's 'mating' surface(to make them meet at a certain point)...disregard the mark? is this supposed to be a torqued bolt, or just tighten the crap out of it??

thanks

fuel pump replacement

well...
go figure..my bad luck finally came around. everything was going well..especially after the help with the canister and whatnot...went to put the new fuel lines on....there is one missing out of the freakin' package. Damn dealerships!!!!!!!
i went ahead and bought them at the dealer since i had to buy a couple other things there, and they are the 'correct' lines anyway.

sucks!!
yeah..i shoulda examined everything better, but i didn't...now i got screwed.

oops.

oh well..pumps off and the tappet didn't fall in!!

i suppose the tappet hole and bolt alignments are the reason for the mark on the bolt and fuel line attachment piece....??

there is no mark, the bolt holes align the pump, and even if it didnt, it wouldnt matter. Each one of the crush washers go on both sides of the mating surface that the bolt fits thru. These are what seals everything up so that there are no leaks. Piece of cake, right?

fuel pump replacement

as far as the mark...just wasn't sure, so i figured i better ask. i read a post before that mentioned tightening the bolt to see if that would stop a leak...that was the first thing i tried, but still had a leak. the fuel lines looked a lil cracked, but it was just minor 'cracks' on the outer surface.

not sure why the mark was put on the bolt and mating surface...oh well.

so much for the one day(part of day) job...it rained right after i removed the pump...then i found out i am a fuel line short.

oh well.

worked out pretty well so far.

i noticed the washer on the mating surface later. and yeah...piece of cake!
nah...really wasn't too bad. found the nice mouse nest in the valley under the canister, cleaned up the area..and after almost passing out from getting the bolts loose from the canister, everthing was out...

just gotta get the (missing) fuel line and i'll hopefully be back in business.

thanks tjbeggs and todd525 for your assistance/help!

fuel pump replacement update

well..what to say.

went from pretty good to crappy and now it's just terrible i guess.

finally finished everything yesterday..replacing the fuel pump. started it up(at least it started and ran good...my luck would typically call for it to not even start) and it's leaking still.

i didn't see the original leak pretty much at all. took it to a diesel shop and that's what he diagnosed(fuel pump). so, i came on here to see if i would possibly be able to do it myself...i don't think the pump is leaking! so i guess that went ok. there's so much crap around the filter housing, i can't see where the leak is coming from. i believe it's worse than before i started to job. i can definately see fuel dripping from the passenger side of the canister wire (forgot what it is) group(that plugs in on the side). as it swoops behind the filter canister, the fuel is dripping from the lowest point of the wires. i'm wondering if it's possibly leaking from the bottom of the fpr? i didn't see anything 'spraying' out anywhere..just an almost steady drip from the wires. it is a lil wet around the fpr area.

when removing the canister and 'unplugging' that metal line from the fpr, is there an oring that might have fallen out?

i'm waiting for the rain to stop before i go look at everything again(maybe tomorrow night)...if i don't see anything obvious..i think i'm just gonna take it in somewhere and let them figure it out.

sorry for the long explaination.

lots of fun.

fuel pump looks good anyway.
