i have a 06 f-250 with the 5.4... the other day the speedometer stuck at 40 mph when i came to a stop at a traffic light. when i would accelerate the speedometer when up like usual but it was reading like 95 mph when i was crusing down the road. the next day it was back to normal. now today when driving to work the speedometer started to act up again... after coming to a stop yet again it fixed itself... any one else have this problem before??
have not ever jump started the truck.... VSS wire??? little more description for that?? im new to all this electronic stuff... is this the Vehicle Speed Sensor?
Well i've seen in several cases of vehicles that when they are jump started their guages go ape ****. Drive it for a couple days and then it's fine.
But if I recall your vehicle speed sensor is on the rear axle. It sends a voltage readout to the computer and speedometer. I do not know what ford is but usually its a super low voltage that increases or decrease with speed. If one of the wires going form the VSS to the comp, or to speedo has a slight nic in it, it can get a small voltage from an outside source (such as another wire with a small nic in the insulation) and give a false readout. Granted there can be a bunch of other small simple things that are occuring this is one of the more common culprits as it is a truck, and not typically babied like a car.
ok thanks very much for the info i will drive it and see if it keeps doing it then i will go from there.... the truck is babies a bit more than my car since it doesnt go to the track and run every other weekend.. but its always a possibility that a wire is nicked
There was a bad batch of instrument clusters from the factory. Go to a dealer and ask about it, if it's under warranty. Ford might replace it even if it's not.
The key symptom is when not moving, it reads a high number, and consistently reads a higher number the faster you go. And is intermittent
thanks for the info.. yea its still under warranty since it only has 18,xxx on it... a good friend of mine works in the service writing at a ford dealer so ill just see about getting the cluster replaced...
I had the same thing happen to my 05 they had to replace the instrument cluster. It took a couple of times back to the dealer to prove it (they thought I was crazy) The only bad thing was engine hours total was reset. I bought the truck used and forgot what the total was before.

This has been going around. A Tahoe in the family just had to have its cluster replaced too do to that exact issue. A recall was not formaly sent but we were notified of the issue.
The day of this post, I had the same problem. My speedometer was stuck at 30 MPH when parked.
I am still debating about the course of action -- Waite for a TSB, or nag the dealership and waiste many hours of my life. The mechanic tells me that it is because of the cold, but if that is the case, I don't think they would be using them on Ice Road Truckers.
There is a TSB on our speedometers. There was an earlier thread with several of us having the same problems. When mine kept telling me I was doing 50 mph in the driveway, the dealer ordered a new cluster and replaced it under warrenty. No issues since.
Mine did it for about 3 days and hasnt done it since. I went in and talked to the dealer about it, and they made a note of it, so if anything like that happens again they know it isn't the first time...
