I'm new here but had a similar problem with my '93 F-350 four-door dually in about 1997. I started getting crazy readouts from my speedometer and slam-shifting from my E4OD.

First traced to an intermittent anti-lock sensor in the diff and when that didn't fix it it was traced to a processor that was part of the instrument cluster that took sensor data from the anti-lock sensor and passed it on to the ECU to control trans shifts.

Nearly $1000 later the whole instrument cluster had to be replaced for a $40 analog to-digital chip that converted the pulses from the anti-lock brake sensor on wheel speed to the ECU. I worked twenty years in the computer business and this is crappy engineering!

I love Ford trucks and especially this one but that's bad design to not place that processing chip in a module under the dash and not require trashing a functional dash cluster for one chip!

I had problems with my cluster (2006 F350 CC) mainly last February (while it was cold, of course). I didn't want to take it in then, because I needed to use it. Waited until April, and the dealer couldn't do anything because I wasn't having the problem anymore. Haven't had a problem since then, but am waiting to see if it returns this winter.

Same issues as reported here - speedo shows me at 50 mph when I stopped, or below zero or about 130 mph when I'm m
oving.

But would you knowingly pay an extra $200 for the vehicle just to have that module be accessible and replaceable as a separate unit?

And then have that module cost $200 for a new one?

It's about 20 degrees where I'm at. This morning I was driving and my speedo got stuck at 20mph while in park. My speedo still works except the fact that I have to subtract 20mph from the speed shown. This is an 07 with less than 15,000 miles. I don't want to take it to the dealer.

same exact thing happened to me the day this was posted on my 06.....call the dealer and they told me it was NOT common and to bring it in after work. Well throughout the day it kept going down REALLY slowly. it was stuck at 42mph for awhile...a few hours latter it was at like 34 then later on it kept going down till later that night it was fine and has been ever since.

Well I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. i noticed my speedo was stuck at 42 when I thought I was at 55-60. It seems to work fine up to that 42 and just stays there. After it got stuck there I floored it and was at an estimated 70ish. The speedo got "unstuck" and went up to 100ish. Temps are in the high 30's. No hard shifts or any other things going wrong. I'll probably do as most and wait it out hoping it fixes itself.

Will this do anything to the odometer? That wold suck for you guys that are going 30 mph when stopped!

"slow" speedo reading

Had the same "slow" reading on my speedo a few months back. I was towing my trailer and pulled into traffic. Noticed the speedo was reading only about 15-20mph when I know I was accelerating to at least 45-50mph. It did this for about 5-6 miles. I pulled off to the side of the road, shut the engine off for a few minutes, turned it back on and everything was fine...very strange...hasn't happened since then.

The Odometer does not seam to be conneced with the Speedometer.

The Speedometer does seem to encourage my frustration. Yesterday, I was driving on 95 in Virginia, with my speedometer pegging the display. As a Virginian, I have to drive well within the speed limit so that I don't get a ticket that exceeds the value of one year of truck payments.

The TSB I read, said that it was for trucks made before 1/06, mine was made 4/06 but obviously, I have the problem. So when I get time, the dealership will here my complaint and hopefully remedy my frustration.

The speed sensor is not an analog voltage, It is a pulse that is sent ever time the sensor detects a tooth on the tone ring.

06 did have a bad rash of clusters, it sounds to me that may be your issue.

The speed signal does not go right to the cluster but rather goes from the abs module to the PCM then from the PCM it goes to the cluster through a CAN serial communication - so the cluster does not actually get a "speed" but rather a serial representation of speed from the PCM

Just some info for you guys...

I can back this up with details - if you want more info - email me merc45@gmail.com

i hope the problem happens again for those hoping it wont bc u guys r still under warranty, right? at least let the dealer note it or something even though i doubt that if they didnt see it and it goes crazy after warranty but if u have a cool dealer maybe...another thing u could do is take a picture with the truck off...the tach would be at zero but the speedo would not be...that should be some good evidence

just this mornin my truck did something odd that might be relevant to this. it wasnt the speedometer but the tachometer.... i stepped on it to get around some one this morning and it revedd up into the 4k + rpms then when i slowed back down it seemed to think that 2500rpm was = 0 rpm so it was like i was doing 30 mph at 4000 rpm ... at first i thot i wasnt shifting down... but then i noticed the engine wasnt really going that rpm.... speedo was fine.. so now its parked at the office and the tach shows 2500 rpm ... ands it sitting there off.... guess my dealer is getting a call today...

sounds like ford should have stayed away from CAN just a little while longer - or maybe its the mechanics of the cluster
