6.4L vs 7.3L ??

Hey guys, I'm currently in an '01 7.3 and am seriously considering moving on to a new 6.4.

My truck's been great, but I'm looking at probably $3-$5k of maintenance repairs over the next couple of years (injectors, hpop, turbo...) and I've got less and less time to tinker with the truck myself.

Realize the 6.4L hasn't been out long, but are you guys seeing any issues in these trucks?

I don't see myself modding a new 6.4, my 7.3 was "lightly modded" -- probably added another 50hp over the 250hp stock.

I didn't want to get into an 6.0 because of some of the injectors issues, but I'm much more tempted to go to a 6.4.

Appreciate your thoughts, Craig

I came from a 2000 7.3 that had some mods. Everything about the new truck is better in my eyes. The engine pulls stronger, the transmission with tow/haul mode operates better, the ride is better and I have had zero issues in 11,000 miles.

The only issue I'm seeing with my 08 is the significant decrease in fuel mileage. Went from a 97' 7.3 getting 16-18mpg to the 08' getting 10mpg. The increase in power is great though.

Mileage sucks ***, but they say all new models are going to suffer from the same emissions standards. I love how quiet it is, I was looking at the V10 but test drove a psd just for the interior features and fell in love with the engine(salesman cautioned me for turning the tires over on the test drive). Except for waiting for the glowplugs to heat-up, you can barely tell it's not a gas engine.

u might get lucky on mileage.... my dads has been crawling up slowly since 5k... hes to the point its way better then any gas 3/4 ton he has owned, i dont think many have regretted getting the 6.4, i mean a few gripe about hte mileage, but there hasnt been squat for problems with any, (minus a very select handful) my dad has always been "gas, gas , gas" and we drove the 6.4 and had to have one

oh yeah, let it warm up a little in mn here they have turbo lag when they are cold give it about 3 miles and power feels like about twice as much, i can see someone test driving one and calling it gutleess if it is stone cold and they beat on it.

Keep your 7.3 as long as the motor will still run. Until they make the 6.4 for 10yrs, it's not worth the breakdowns or extra fuel costs. Either that or give it a year or two so that the bugs can be worked out, if it ever happens, consider the 6.0 possible the biggest flop in diesel engines. Just way your options carefully before you go shelling out alot of money for new truck.

Or at least until 2010 when the new motor comes out.

Compared to the 7.3 the disadvantages I see are required cab removal for some repairs, fuel mileage, and the big one. No captains chairs with a stick shift. Other than that the 6.4 has the advantage.

i say get the big oil, some nice injectors, and a nice turbo for your ole 7.3 and have fun with it. big oil, some 160 cc injectors and a big turbo would make it a hot rod for alot cheaper than a new 08. throw on an 05-07 grille and headlights and it'll really be nice

Don't do it man!!!!!!!! keep the 7.3 for another year My 2008 is JUNK!!

and if you read on this forum you will find others who say the same.

I don't understand how people can tell you there is no problem . Myself and others have been complaining about ours for months. Go read some of my posts, so I don't have to list all the problems I have had.
I still don't have a good 4x4 system it makes a real nasty clunking sound

P.S. Ford customer care was going to call me back the 26th I have not heard from them. (still waiting for parts)

Thanks for the pep talk Bruce, I think I'm gonna do exactly what you suggested. I was in the middle of an oil leak and finally tracked it down, so all's good in the world now.
