I have been getting really horibble gas mileage for an inline 6. I have replaced the gas line, gas tank, fuel filter, air filter, exhaust, gutted out catalic converter, replaced fuel pump, new sark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. After all this i get a big 8.07 miles to the gallon, no lie.
This happens to a lot of peolple who drive around at 4000 RPM.;-) Seriously, though, what year, EFI or carbed, AOD-C6-5-speed, what gears? Need a bit more info. Also, what is your driving style? Do you tow? In town, highway?
If EFI, pull the engine codes to see if there are any. Could be a bad sensor, a malfunctioning EGR, etc. etc.

It is a 1984 F150, 4x4, 4 speed manual tranny, 31 inch tires. I do not tow or haul anything. Most of my driving is in town. I know that my exhaust can't have any restrictions because it is brand new, and i have already checked that.
Let's see, big heavy truck, city driving, and no overdrive. Hmmm. You're really worried about MPG's? I agree, you should be hitting probably 12's or 13's. The only reason my friend's truck gets such good mileage is because it's EFI, and has a 5-speed, and it's not carrying around the extra weight of a 4x4. She normally gets 17-18 mpg.
What's your timing set at? Have you checked the vaccuum spark advance? Is the EGR functioning? Does the truck feel doggy or idle rough?
Just some things to check.
On my truck, which also has 31" tires, the speedometer/odometer is off by 12%, which means that I'm actually getting about 13.5 mpg, though it looks like I'm only getting 12.
