Question Not getting gas

I have a 94' Ranger XLT that is not getting gas. I removed the gas tank and fuel pump and tested the pump. It seems to be working. I changed the fuel filter and it is still not getting gas all the time. If I get it started with starter fluid, it will run for a few days. But if I let it set for a few days, it doesn't seem to be getting any gas to turn over. Any suggestions?

I would start by checking for power to the fuel pump and then testing the pressure.

Items checked so far

When I had the fuel pump out, I reconnected it and set it in a bucket of gas. When I turned on the ignition, the pump ran for a short time.

As far as the fuel pressure, I will have to get a tester to do that. I do have an extra set of injectors, the rail and the fuel pressure regulator. Someone suggested that the pressure regulator could be bad. Is there any way to check that or would it just be wise to switch them out?

It just seems strange that it could be the pressure regulator when it runs for a few days but when it sets for a day or two that it doesn't get any gas. Unless the fuel pressure slowly drops while it is simply setting there. I don't know if there is supposed to be a constant fuel pressure even while it isn't running.

Does the pump run when you don't get gas to the engine?

If the pump does run when you don't get gas then I would test the fuel pressure at the rail before doing anything else.

Sometimes the anti-drainback valve fails and you have to cycle the key a few times to get fuel back to the rail, you might want to look into this too.

Talking Thanks for you help

After listening to your advise, I started checking the electrical from the battery down. It turns out that it was where all the wires connected to the neg terminal of the battery. I installed a fancy (Piece of crap) connectors and one of the wires was not getting a good ground. Now every time I turn the key, I can hear the pump running and it starts right up. Thanks alot for your help Ken. I appreciate it.
