This is my first post in this section. My son has a 97, 4x4, 4.6, w/ auto trans. The rear end went out. The right side axle gear has worn into the carrier enough that the c clip holding the axle in fell off, then you can guess what happened.
The left side gear has a tooth missing too.
Now for the fix.
1. Would it be cheaper to rebuild it or pull a complete rear from the bone yard?
2. How do I tell what axle I have?
3. Is there a good donor other than the same model truck to find one in?
If it helps, this is how the tag on the cover reads: S862B
3 55 88 6M17
Any 8.8 from a 97-03 f-150(96 and older had different lug pattern) that has 3.55s should work. Try to find one that says something like 3L55..... this means its a 3.55 ratio w/limited slip. I think all of these trucks came with rear ABS, so you shouldnt need to worry about that. Also find one that has the same brake setup, if you go with the other it will make the swap harder.
Also if you want a stronger axle get a 9.75 axle out of the 97-03 with the 5.4l. When you get an axle out of a salvage yard, it would be a good idea to take the cover off to inspect the interals and check for alot of play(since you would probably want to change the fluid anyway, it uses 75-140 syn. fluid)
