How do you go about getting a title for an old truck when you buy one that dont have a title? It would be pointless to buy a truck and then not be able to drive it because I cant get a title for it.
check your local clerk and recorder, there should be a process that tells you how, you could probably google your question and get a reponse that would apply to your state
When I grew up in Tennessee, you just had to get the county title / liscense department to apply for a lost title. All you needed was a notorized bill of sale.
Here in Georgia, we only need a bill of sale to rgister it, but I am told you can apply for a lost title with a bill of sale.
I would suggest you check your local tag office in KY.

Steps are 1. Bring vin to DMV to check if stolen in your state. 2. Bonded title application. To apply for bonded title you need to bond the vehicle. The bond value could be up to 100% of vehicle value. The bond cost could be 10%-50% of that. 3. Sit and wait for DMV to search other states for to see if stolen.
Other option: Try to find last titled owner. Ask them if they mind If you apply for lost title in their name and if they will sign a motor vehicle power of attorney for that vehicle. Then after I recieve title I go thru the regular sale procedure
I've done both the second is much cheaper and quicker
!!!!But most IMPORTANT check the vin at your local DMV!!!!!!!. I had repo men show up to pick up a so called abandoned motorcycle. Didn't cost me a dime
Good luck Evan
Also, check with the Highway Patrol/State Police, things don't always get immediately reported to both agencies.
To obtain a lost title in California, there are 2 ways to go about it that wont cost you any money. If the vehicle is not in the system, you simply get the truck weighed at a weigh master station, get the VIN verified, and you fill out an application for lost title + a statement of fact stating that you own the vehicle, have had it for a million years on your property, and have not operated it on any roads. If it is in the system, and you know the correct name and address that matches what is in the DMV computer, you can fill out an application for lost title, and a form transferring the rig to you. You will need the previous owners signature for these forms. If there are any back fees on the rig, you are now responsible for paying them. If there is still a lien on the title that was not signed off by the bank (but paid off) you will need to get in touch with that financial institution listed on the title to try and get it signed off.
As Rusty7983 mention try Broadway Title Company out of Birmingham Ala. 1-800-464-3222. If the vehicle is under a 74 model they can help. The great state of Alabama didn't issue titles for vehicles prior to 1974; they will research your vin and verify it's not stolen and issue you a bill of sale; you then convert it into a Kentucky title. My buddy has done several old trucks with them. Trust me the Great State of Tennessee is very strict on lost title's and he hasn't had one turned back. Will run you about $300 for this proceure. The majic number is 1974 and below.
