Your state DMV branch should be able to tell you what you need to do.

No title

Do you still need a title? I think in my state after so many years you don't.

Check the laws, you may be attempting to violate federal law.

getting a title

I think some salvage yard get a "salvage title" (can't run on the roads) then after repairs they get a "Rebuilt Title" after some kind of road State inspection is done. Ask for a supervisor at DMV.

Arkansas has a company called Arkansas Title Company. They charge $125, and you send them your VIN, and a receipt, selling them your vehicle for a dollar. What they then do is register the vehicle in their name, sign the title over to you, and mail it back to you with a bill of sale, for a dollar. Then you take your truck to the local DMV, and register it as a newly purchased used vehicle, that you paid a dollar for. Then you get a title, registration, and you're good to go.

I've used them MANY times over the years when I've fabricated things I don't have a title for, and simply used a frame "section" welded to my frame, that I got out of the junkyard. This company doesn't care if the vehicle was totalled, salvage, new, used, whatever, just as long as the title search doesn't bring up another name other than yours (which they do check, to protect themselves).

While $125 is steep, it certainly solves a lot of problems. I used them for a homemade "from scratch" car, and it worked fine. I have a title for a 1967 Buick GTP, a vehicle that never existed.

Long Story

Reminds me of a motorcycle I had back in the late 60's. I bought it off a guy who did not have a title. He got a bill of sale when he bought it, which all that was required in his state and he had lost it. My state required two notorized bills of sale, from out of state,to get title. A friend and I drove close to 1000 miles each way to a state that used bills of sale. I sold the bike to him and had it notorized. -- Long story - short -- I got transfered overseas for about 5 years and friend moved to I don't know where. Then about 5 years after I got back to the states, a guy calls me and asks if I used to have a motorcycle. Met up with him and he handed me $500.00.
Friend had got title, gave bike away, that guy also gave the bike away.. Each guy told the story of the effort to get title. The last guy had sold the bike for $500 about a year before he found me. I could not belive the honesty of all the people back then.

You might try the Bill of Sale routine if you have a couple friends you can trust. Of course I'm not sure if any states still have the Bill of Sale option.

Good Luck.

Cool story.

Thats what the Ark title company does, except you don't have to drive anywhere. Just mail them what you have, and they mail back a title a few weeks later.

Thats why I've liked them over the years... no road trips, no hassles locally. Can you imagine the hassle of registering a car ya built from scratch, with a frame chunk (with vin!) welded somewhere convienent?

"What is it?"
"That doesn't look original?"
"Huh?"
"No title, next!"

If it's not "hot", put a lien on it with a local lien co.,make storage outragous and wait 30 days.most likely no one will claim it and you get a clear title from your state.Have been doing this for years, and it's legal. Most out of state companies only work for vehicles over 10 yrs.old.

I know in Ohio you have to be a dealer to have rebuilt vehicles inspected. The average joe can't do it any more. I know the highway patrol will put a new vin tag on at that time, but I'm pretty sure it's a federal offense to tamper with a vin tag.

i bought the truck with blown engine from a younger guy who told me that it was his truck. i got a bill of sale from him. but then i find out that the truck belongs to his grandfather who is in a nursing home somewhere in ga. and his family wont give me the title. now i cant find the kid who i bought it from. and the vin tag is in the dash.
i just thought that it might be easier to get a salvage title i already put a mustang engine into the truck and im driving it now on the tags that were on the truck since there good till may 2005 anyone got any ideas?

moondog i see you arein AZ. best way is to go to the mvd and get the paper work for a bonded title. you will need to go to a bonding company, which the mvd will direct you to. you will pay a fee depending on what the vehicles current resale is. they will do a AZ search, try contact the owners if in AZ. if after 30 days no one response to the letters sent, they will provide you a bonded title. the best thing to do is basically scrap the truck and tell them you put over 1000.00 worth of work, and they can pay, or hack up the title. if they refuse to pay after 30-90 days, the bonding company will give you a title. this is how we do lein sales here in AZ on vehicles. i have had 5 vehicles in my shop over the years i had to get bonded titles for. it isn't easy, but it really isn't that hard.
