I've always been a fan of the bumpside, but had to sell mine to buy my house. I lucked out to find a '71 ranger in my backyard, longbed 9" just like what I want, good straight body, no title. can I get a title just cuz it came with my house or do I need to find out who owned it? I got another idea too, if I could buy another door or donor truck with a door (vin's on the door) with a title, I would be in business right? is the vin anywhere else on the vehicle?
The vin is actually all over, on the firewall, frame, front corner of the bed underneath, it's more spots than I ever imagined you'd find on something this old. All except the frame one are on removable tags.
If your first 2 ideas don't work then your third one will. Just don't do what I did and come right out and ask about it. Some people get really bent out of shape. If you do do it that way just keep it to yourself, it's the easiest way. But I would try to get it with the purchase of your house someway b/c it did come with your house.
i'm a risk taker but this don't sound like a big one, as long as my title matches enough of my truck to get insurance, I should be okay? It is rightfully mine anyway, just need to swap the door to get it on the road, like changing a flat or something, right? in OK all they want to get insurance is a vin, and they don't even go look at it, I don't think this would be any more fraudulent than swapping cabs to change the dashboard vin on a newer truck.:con fused:
hillbilly, The vehicle is in your possession, that is a plus. Your state should have a process to claim an abandoned vehicle. I suggest you look into it.
So you cobble up something and the last legal owner decides he wants his truck back and starts the process of reclaim and your DMV checks your new found truck to find you have falsely registered it.
Now you have a stolen vehicle charge against you. Is it worth the short cut?
agree. you can go to your dmv and do a title search as well. Im my state its only a 15day wait. They send a letter to whoever had last legal claim on the vehicle. If they dont respond they can re-issue you a title. There are also liens you can put on it etc but that gets messy.
I purchased a motorcycle once without the title from a bike shop. The old owner didnt want to pay for the work so it sat for 15 years almost. I purchased it. fixed it and then contacted the old owner. I told them i purchased the bike from the shop and that I would like the title or to sell them the bike(it was only a couple hundred). They wouldnt give me the title or buy the bike since i wasnt a "certified" mechanic. bunch of bs. Luckily it was a trail bike and i just rode it off road and didnt deal with the hassle.
Seems the only one that's real important is the frame one since every thing else is removable, try that title search cause chances are it'll come up clean, good luck with it. I like my bumpside to!
I can tell you that the owner can come back and try to get the truck, BUT you as the owner now has the right to charge a storing fee. That way if they do come back and try to get the truck they have to pay you for it. So either you can make money on it or you keep the truck, that how you get around that and it is legal. You don't have to change the door out either all you need is the vin plate. Just change them out. In KY it is a 30 day wait and the truck is yours to do with what you want so check yours. If I was you I would charge $35 to $40 dollars a day. Rack the money up quick b/c if they just left it there they sure are not going to pay you to get it back.
Id Check with the local police on that. In many state, you can NOT charge where no contract has been made. But you can dile for a abandoment title. This is for when a car or truck is left on land you own and you want to do something with. In state I have lived in it work sthis way
File a claim with the RMV/DMV, You then have to send a Certified letter to anyone on record who has legal claim to the car. ( As in Owner and or lean Holder ) After 30 days, You can then file for a new Title and claim the car
You really need to check to make clear on what your choices are. In all stats now, if your remove the VIN plates and change them, This is fraud and will get you jail time with charge stemmer from but not limited to Grand thieft auto, Joy riding, Fee advasion, Tax advasion, Thief by decieption, Title tampering and many more other nasty changrs they like to stack on like Drive with out Ims Since and Ins you have would not apply to a change VIN plate.
You can also buy a title online. Broadwaytitle.com. I did it for a 57 chevy and it came from Georgia. My state [Colorado] siad that it was the most profissional paper work they have seen. I got a title on the spot and it went through the state.
Yes, Just ask Boyd Coddington, Here in California that is Illagle and carries a $100,000 Fine ( thats what he paid to keep from going to JaiL for 15 years ) The Best is just Visit your Local DMV/RMV and ask them what to do.
