Just took my brothers explorer after the knucklehead seized the motor and I'm wondering what years are compatible with 2000.
Also what size socket do I use so i can pull the front seats it looks like the kid threw a garbage bag in there and rolled the thing over a cliff
Any and all help is appreciated

actually 95-97's could have used 2 different 4.0L engines - the newer 4 was first used in the 97, and this was the year that ford phased out the original 4 OHV
but, that is a good question to add to his - can you use either in any of the Gen2 explorers? also how about the V8?
I need new heads for my 4.0L OHV - and it would be the same cost to just do an engine replacement from the boneyard - so, I'm wondering.... Love to shoehorn a V8 in there... :-)
It's the xls model 4.0 motor auto 4wd etc.
Would like the v8 but I don't have all the tools to modify the mounts.
Do you know which 4.0 V6? The OHV was the standard motor used at least until '98. In '97, ford introduced the 4.0 SOHC as an option. Later they dropped the OHV and made the SOHC the standard engine in Explorers. The switch occurred somewhere near 2000, but I'm not sure which year.
So basically it boils down to this. If you have the SOHC, you'll be looking for a '97-'01 4.0 SOHC. '02+ SOHC's might also work, I'm not sure. You might consider having the timing chain tensioners updated before you install the engine.
If you have the OHV, you'll be looking for a '95 to ?? OHV.
