So I have a 2000 F350 and am in the market for a cheap topper. Any advice on what sort of compatibility issues I might face in buying a used topper?
I see toppers on craigslist, but they are for different years, or from F150s, etc. Obviously the box length is an issue, but what year ranges (with the correct box length) would be compatible?
Here's a chart that was pretty useful in my search. For mine I picked up one off of a mid 90's f-150 and it fits but the edges of the bed and the edges of the cap don't line up perfect so it looks like the cap is offset on the bed, but it sits on the rails fine.

Thanks for the chart! That is exactly what I was looking for.
It looks like the F350 Long box is slightly bigger than the F150, but its good to know that it should fit. I am not trying to win a beauty contest here, just trying to find a cheap cover to keep my stuff dry.
Perhaps this can help others with '08s or later. I've just ordered a cap for my '11 and I can repeat what the dealer told me. I consider him credible.
1) Regular cab, extra cab, and crew cab don't matter. The trailing profiles are identical.
2) Due to the plastic cover's profile on the tailgate the '08s onward are different from the '07s and previous.
3) Having the tailgate built-in step matters. I don't know if a cap that fits the built-in step will fit those without it or vice-versa. At least one of those combinations will not work. Perhaps both won't work.
Summary: for the '08s onward (thru today 17MAY'13 !!) short bed or long bed and step or no step matter for SDs.
I tried to buy off Craigslist for months and failed. It seemed that there were plenty of caps for any other pickup!!
I have bought two toppers off of Craigslist. Both were in good shape. You just have to wait for the right one. Buying a used topper will save you a lot of money. Good luck.
Thanks guys! I ended up visiting relatives in another part of the state this weekend, checked Craigslist near their house and found a topper off a 1992 Ford F150 long box for $75!
We tried it out and it fit fine on my 2000 Ford F350 long box. The beds on the older trucks must not have been tapered smaller in the back like the new ones are. So there is a slight overhang on the corners, but nothing that goes completely over the bed rails.

I bought it and am pretty happy with it :-)
Niice. Can't complain too much about $75 since a new one will cost you $1k+
Minke your dealer is correct. I just bought a used cap for my 11. Unfortunately i read this thread to late. It was off of a 07 f250. Everything fits fine except the plastic bump out on the tailgate. I even removed it but the gate it self is made like that. Im wondering if a 07 tailgate would fit the 2011's. And also wondering what these cap companys are doing different to make them work on the newer trucks.

I had a dealer tell me a topper for a crew cab wouldn't fit my Super Cab and I would have to order a new one ($1200 vs $650 for the used one from a crew cab he had.) Total BS! I shopped elsewhere. The Leer from a crew cab I bought off Craigslist fits perfectly!
When my '11 supercab was totaled by hail I sold my cap to a guy with an '11 thru '16 crew cab. It fit fine.
My son's '05 Tundra was 15 feet from my SD and wasn't totaled. His ATC cap was a mess (torn fiberglass visible thru the gelcoat) and my ARE cap had only cosmetic damage.
dont shop in the parts category. Shop in the autos for sale category and look for trucks like yours with toppers on them. Reach out to the seller and see if they’ll just sell you the top. You’re guaranteed it’ll fit, and a $10k truck with a topper is worth about $10k without a topper. The smart seller will see this as win-win.
I did did this for my truck and scored the perfect top for $300.
Hey guys, I just bought a 1974 F250 LB and plan to go camping in it quite a bit. I found a Swiss topper with the exact same paint color as mine from a 1993 Dodge with a w250 Cummins Long Bed. Does anybody have experience with these Swiss toppers?
just want to make sure they’re compatible before I drive a state away to pick it up. Appreciate any help you have to offer!
