fuel pump removal
I don't know how true this is but I asked a Ford mechanic I know about what damage the tappet will do if it drops down into the engine when you pull the pump. He said it doesn't hurt anything, it just drops down and lays there. I never pulled the engine apart so I don't know. Does anybody know for sure what happens if it drops out? Wouldn't it lay on the cam?
Is your 96 a cali fuel system?
Mine is a E-350 4X4. I know how you feel. Topper is its a Cali fuel system in the van (97 on). Just did my peeping pump last week.

According to International if the cams pump lobe is in the position of maximum lift, the tappet can't fall down in the engine, it will rest on the cam lobe for easy removal. If the lobe is at the lowest position the tappet could fall down in the engine. So correct procedure is to remove pump bolts and lines and bar engine over till pump rises to its highest position for safe removal.
