Fuel pump

How do you guys check the fuel pump? I have the original pump with 200,000 miles on it.

Good effort! I'm sure someone will chime in with more details, but there is a pressure test and a volume test. My pump passed the volume test (simply undoing a fuel line, and catching the diesel that comes out while turning the engine over), but I didn't have a pressure gauge to test it with - and as the gauges were twice the price of a new pump, I just went ahead and replaced the pump. Sure enough, I had a leaky diaphragm, so the volume was OK under no-load, but wouldn't pump enough fuel (or would add air) when under load.

Chris.

With the number of bad parts out of the box today, if it passes the flow and pressure test, keep on running it.

Minimum 1/3 pint in 10 seconds cranking.

4 to 7 PSI on the pressure test.

I second this. It could be your oem one with 200,000 miles is better than a replacement.

My first one I couldnt keep running at idle, had to rev it up a red lights and it just kept getting worse until I got home (about 12 miles) The second time It just wouldnt start and I got no smoke coming out of the pipe.
