i got a 94 f150 5.8 liter and i got a tranny problem. the tranny will drop out of gear while it is in drive. and it will not shift sometimes to. it dose not do it all the time just when it warns up sometimes, it will go away and come back in a week or so. any idea
How's your fluid level and color? Start the truck and warm it up by driving around for 15 or 20 minutes, then check the fluid with the engine running and the tranny in neutral. Should be a nice pink-red color. Also smell the end of the dipstick to see if it smells burnt.
Its the shift sensor "MPLS" (I think) . It acts like it drop into nuetrall right? then bangs back in. Or you will be driving along with no stress (down grade ) And will act like Neutral for second. I don't know price of new ones. As SKandocious can tell you I got parts hid every where . So I reuse things.
The the sensor on the shaft shift linkage hooks to .
Block wheels (you will be shifting tranny trying to get things loose. )
Unhook cable ,
Loosen retaining nut on shift arm ,
Pay attention to how sensor is positioned on slots .(I never had any trouble but there is some adjustment there. )
Remove 2 10 MM (I think ) Bolts .
It will come off. you can swap in less than 15 minute without jacking up truck.
Please remember to take cable off first . I messed mine up trying to unhook with on
Good luck if I had a spare I'd give it to you to check it out . Good luck
Chris is right about trying adjustment .I should have posted that I never was lucky enough for it to work . For more than week any way. Hope it works for you.
Its the problem with having extra parts . If can test it I do . other wise its dig in a box . Later
I Had The Same Problem With My E40d 1990 351 Windsor , I Took Off The Mlps ,used Air Pressure To Clean Grease & Dirt, Cleaned It With Electrical Parts Cleaner ,install It Back On Trans & Adjusted , It Drove With No Problems After That.

I'll give that a try some day while milling around the shop. I have 2 "bad" MLPS down there. Later
I had the sensor go out on my truck and it did the exact same thing, me not having a clue took it to the dealer and it was roughly 600 dollars to diagnose replace and adjust the new one.
