Also take the tension out of the driveline and check for play in the axle. It sounds like it could be a rear axle problem too.

Grab the cardon shaft and try to turn it with your hand, if your u-joints are bad it will have a lot of play.

the clunk into reverse could be either ujoints or the rear pinnion yoke is loose and needs tightend up.

do you have an OD button on your dash or end of shifter? when was the last time you performed a complete tranny fluid change and filter change?

You might also check your gears. My truck had a loud howling sound while driving down the road too. Turns out I had lost a gear tooth and was just flying around in the housing. Not good.

oh and x like 50 on checking the u joints

there is a large nut on the end. they sometimes work loose. the haynes manual gives the torque spec for that.

When checking the u-joints and pinion yolk, besure to have it in netral. If the yolk is loose, you are supposed to change the crush sleeve. But I have seen and done it with out replacing it. If you have a yolk, you can hold it with a big pipe wrench and tighten the nut with a socket. If you have a disc yolk, you can put two bolts in and place a bar between them to hold it.

By the way, If your tranny has OD, it is a E40D.

Oh yeah, i know what that is, you broke either the pinion or the ring. Open that differential, you'll see several broken teeths.
