i posted this last year and read of somebody posting the same problem in another post.
my 1994 xl 3.0 supercab 5-speed has 166,000 miles on her.
when i shift, the rpm's jump up alittle and then come down.
also when coming to a stop and put the truck in neutral ata stop, the tach comes down to about 1200, sticks, then goes down to 800 approximately.
i have check the throttle cable and everything seems unstuck.
i scanned the truck and got no codes.....could a bad IAC valve cause this?
A bad IAC can definately cause this problem. The engine is supposed to automatically rev up a little when you put it into a gear, this is to help prevent stalling. But if it is sticking, the valve may be gummed up. It is an inexpensive part, so after doing some simple tests to verify that it is the problem you can just buy a new one.
sometimes they get so gummed up they just can't be cleaned. IIRC, they cost between $60-120 new. You can try finding a friend with the 3.0 and convince him to borrow his IAC for a bit to see if that fixes your problem before buying the part
