I posted a thread a while back about my '99 having problems running once you got a few miles down the road. It is acting much better now that the weather is warming up. But last time it gave me problems i was coming down a hill so the engine cuttin in and out didnt try to throw me through the windshield and i could see what was goin on with my gauges. i noticed that when it cut out my tach. would drop like its not getting any signal. What do you guys think?
I agree with Roland.. sounds like the CPS..cam position sensor..There is recall on them.. Call Ford and give them your VIN # if you have not change it.. ...or change it yourself.. under $25 from Ford.
Did you get a check engine light with it stalls..? if not, probably not your UVC connector..
I do get a check engine light that goes off as soon as you shut the truck off. i even took it to get it scanned without shuting it off and no codes came up. but a cps would make sense now that you guys mention it. any idea on how likely it is that the recall would affect my truck. i dont know if it has ever been changed. i got it a few months ago and the guy said he never had any problems so i dont think he did it either. Also no record of it in the reciepts he kept in the glove box.

You can either drop by a dealer or call one with your vin # and they can tell you if it was done. They are only around 27.00 at the dealer. Where did you go to get the scan?

1) if your have a 'check engine' light came on then you have a code stored. standard OBD II code reader will not read the codes on these trucks. Where did you take it to get 'read'?
2) if the 'Recall' of the CPS was done by a Dealer or an agent of Ford.... they would have entered you VIN number in to show that the Recall was done on your truck. call any Dealer to find out if it was done.
3) You put UVCH in the title of the thread. Have you had the valve covers off to check the connections? Did you do the 50. cent mod or use the Ford ties? It may have slipped back out if not.
((sorry for the repeated info...I had started this post being typed and then had to leave while it was still up and unsent, i came back and finished it after Rick had posted)))
I had a local shop do the scan but they do not specialize in diesel and are not anybody I regularly see. They just happen to be close to where I work. I have not taken the valve covers off the truck but have had a lot of people suggest that it could be the problem. Cant remember now if I have mentioned in this thread that I'm pretty new tro diesels and have only had this truck a couple months with this being my only problem aside from routine maintanence.
Here is a Link to show you how to fix the UVC connector.. and also to check other items while the covers are off: (even if this is not your problem, i think it still a good idea to take the time and remove the valve covers and do the 50 cent fix and re torque the injectors, etc..and inspect the wiring harness. These are common problems that can give you grief down the down and it is best to do a little work to prevent them.. no parts involved, all labor) https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ck-shakes.html
Got the cps changed a last week and im still having problems. it seems to have made some difference. the problem is that sometimes it seems better than before and others it seems worse.

Are you still getting a "check engine light" when is runs bad ?.. If so, you need a do the valve cover removal and check the connector/s.. If they are loose, your engine will run fine sometimes and sometimes not..also you need to check the center pins on the connector/s. They sometimes get burned because of the loose condition.. (arcing).
So whats the best geuss on how long fixing the harness should take. i dont have anything fancy but i wouldnt think it would take anything fancy either.
Just a guess... but 2 to 3 hours per valve cover..
If your truck is tall, i would suggest building or getting a platform to stand on.. It makes it easier to get over the engine..
