Steering Boxes

I called around.. HOWE Performance doesnt make boxes for the Road.. PCS Motorsports doesn't make boxes for 04's either.. So I talked to AGR.. He can sell me a Ram Assisted for $1000.. Upgraded Stock Pump with Ports, Gearbox and Hydraulic Dampner Cylinder.. Said it'll keep my front end perfect.. What do ya'll think?

I know our boxes suck.. They blow out too fast, with me running the lift and wanting 37's soon.. I figured it'll be $300-400 for a decent box, why not spend some extra and get a really good system that'll hold..

Opinions?

Storm, I am looking at the same set up. At the very least the pump upgrade when mine dies. Mine seems to be working good right now.

Have you tried ORU??

Personally, I would recommend PSC or ORU way before AGR......sucks that PSC doesn't have anything for you.

I've known of too many issues with AGR over the years. Even though I did fix a FUBAR'd install of a Rock Ram with a buddy of mine and the guy liked the system once we got it working properly, I'd still be hesitant to run one.

I run 38s and have run 40s and still have my stock box, but I do have crossover steering aka high steer which makes it easier on the system to turn the big tires.
I'm gonna to a PSC setup at some point (I already have the pump and some other parts from a buddy of mine who swapped a CR into his SD and no longer needed them).

I'll check on ORU.. It's bout $100 more.. I only got 35's but hell I got about 3 inches play.. I'm afraid to tighten it for fear it'll start leaking.. Is an ORU overkill on a 35? or maybe 37 when I decide to jump up and go 6-8" lift??

Either way I probably need to replace the box since Ford didnt put the Pitman on right when they put the lift on.. For 8 months it was sitting at the very bottom of the spline and it chewed it up pretty good.. I figure I might as well replace it since we had to replace damn near everything else in the course of repair..

With the ORU don't you still have to upgrade the pump ? Is that $850 core for a steering box, a little steep ? It does seem like a good system.

I'm not sure if ORU thinks you need to replace the pump. I know guys with 44-49" tires running the ORU setup and love it.

I do agree that the PSC is a better value.

DcSpecial, what kind of problems did you experience with AGR ? Bad Pumps ?
Bad boxes ? Were they installed correctly ? Bad hoses ? Just curious because I'm trying to do my homework before mine dies or before I upgrade. What part of thier system is the weak link ?

All the ones I've heard of were bad pumps and boxes. I remember one guy on TDS had 3 pumps fail on him in a row. Never heard or seen any hose or cylinder issues?

Being as all my contacts in the off road industry stopped using AGR products a few years ago, and most people buy ORU and PSC, I don't have any recent info on their stuff.

PSC does (or at least did) have stuff for the 7.3....I have their pump sitting in a box in my garage.

I had an AGR system on a GM 4X4 and experienced 2 bad boxes off the shelf and 1 bad pump. I am not impressed with there quality control at all.

Storm,

Talk to Marty at Truck Toyz, he has installed ram assist on some of his trucks. Ask what he recommends for your application.
