Would it be possible to install an optional third row seat on a 2005 Ford Explorer Limited that did not come with one from the factory? My wife and I were thinking of getting the parts and installing them if it was possible. I know it would be extremely expensive to get all of the parts from the dealership, but I was considering if I could find one in a junk yard.
Any input would be greatly appreciated as our family is expanding and we would like to keep the same vehicle and not have to go for the mammoth of a vehicle like a suburban or expedition.
I'd give you mine out of an '06, because I never use them. However, I think it would be a very difficult install.
Spikedog,
I don't think it would be easy to install as from what Ford told my wife, all of the explorers are set up the same, predrilled and set up for every option. Whether or not your car gets those options installed depends on how your vehicle was built. I would be interested in the third row seat assembly with all of the brackets if you are still looking to get rid of yours.
I wanted to get rid of mine, and the dealer told me it'd be next to impossible. Like the floor is a different height and all. I don't want to tear them out and have the hole, I want a flat cargo deck area.
The 2005 explorer limited we looked at has the two storage compartments that lift up and have the molded wells which should allow the seats to fold flat. You might just need to get the flat panels that would go in place of where the seats would be. Heck if your interior is the same color as ours, we might even be able to work out some type of a deal that you would get our panels and we get the seats. Lets face it, we would have no need for the flat access panels once we get the third row seat.
i dont know, buy why would ford buld two truck platforms for the Explorer? I got to beleive they are all the same on the bottom and as you said, you probably have the tapped holes, just plugged or covered up by the carpet. Maybe different trim around the fender wells, etc.
The 3rd row seat option includes a 40-20-40 2nd row with outer seats that "tumble" forward to allow access to the rear. Also, the shoulder harnesses are in the rear pillars. If you want it all, it ain't gonna be cheap or easy - JMHO. This also assumes the rear decks are the same.
