I have a 1992 F-150 with 181,000 plus miles on it. I replaced the radiator, water pump, clutch fan assembly, upper and lower hoses and the thermostat. Whenever I drive the truck around town I find that the coolent level has gone down almost to the top of the core in the radiator. Any ideas as to what may be causing this?
I'd guess a head gasket leak. The I-6 heads are so long that they are prone to develop leaks. A slight leak pressurizes your cooling system through the water jacket and cause the coolant to gradually be blown out of the over flow tube. Not a bad job to tackle.
Pressure test the cooling system when the engine is cold . Also look at the hose running from the radiator to the coolant recovery tank , Esp where it connects to the tank . If its leaking there the coolant can be hard to see because of all the places it can run before it ever hits the ground .
As a followup to several replies I got, I took the radiator out and had it tested. There was a very small leak close to the drain plug. The parts store gave me a replacement with no questions asked. A big thanks to everyone involved.
