How reliable is the I-6? Looking at a '92 f-150 with 127960 miles on it. Don't have a lot of money to put a lot of work into it, if the engine causes problems. But from what I have read this engine seems very reliable!
128,000 miles is just breaking in a 300. although I am sur that you will hear both sides, It has been my experience that the 300 is a VERY reliable engine. mine currently has 211,000 miles on it.
I say go for it. I think you will be happy. it is a pretty tourquey motor and gets pretty good gas milaege.
VERY! reliable! mines from 78 137 000k on it and still not one problem that has caused it never to start or stall. this is the best engine ford ever made

MIGHT be able to kill it. This includes putting sugar in the gas tank and running nitrous oxide through straight. Well, that may be over doing it but this engine is totally capable of (in my opinion) 400,000 miles. Regular oil changes and keeping your foot off the pedal helps too.
I hope the rest of it is in good shape!!! I might have actually found a truck now!
Do ya'll think http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=88285645&dealer_id=584108&max _price=4995&start_year=1982&end_year=2003&address= 23113&search_type=used&make=FORD&model=F150PICKUP& min_price=&distance=25&advcd_on=n&advanced=n&color =&car_year=1992&ac_afflt=none that is a good deal?
You can kill the I6 easily by revving it too high all the time. I know a girl killed two of them in a year (each with over 150k miles) by shifting at 5000rpm all the time.
That said, if you don't drive like a putz you shouldn't have any problems for a long long time.
What is the red line considered to be on a stock, carbed 300? I don't like to run mine over 3,000 rpm but I do run it at 2600-2900 rpm on the highway for extended periods of time.
The price is too high. Start your offering at $3200(?) for such a truck (I got my short-bed 1993 XL base trim (nice tires though, bed liner, plastic tool box, chrome fender trim, 5-speed, stock interior, factory steel rally wheels) w/ 84,500 miles for a lot less than the price they're asking). Build up from there to ~$4000 if you really want to pay it, but even then the price seems like they're making good money on it. I believe in buying good deals though.
At the price they're asking I'd expect it to be an F-250 with the same trim, engine and miles.
Just curious... but what do you consider "good" gas mileage?
I have a F150 shortbed 5spd and 2.73 gears and only pull 17-18mpg on pure highway miles doing 70mph.
My dad's Dodge 3/4ton ext cab long bed gets about 22mpg with 4.11gears. and it weighs a heck of alot more than my little truck... course that turbo diesel really helps out the mileage..
But still, I personally dont consider 17mpg good. I'm actually thinking of trading it for something with better gas mileage since I'm putting 500mi per week on it. BUT I do love the 300, its been one heck of a truck so far!
