crankshaft gear removal

I'm in the process of changing my cam and timing gears, but I've run into a snag. The crankshaft gear does not have the holes in it that your supposed to attach the puller to. The replacement set has the threaded holes but the one on the crankshaft now does not. My other gear puller with the arms won't fit behind the gear. Does anyone no how to take this gear off? It looks like whoever installed the gear may have used a hammer and drift because the gear is marred. I also tried a bearing splitter but it to wouldn't fit behind the gear.

It sounds like whoever put the gear on put it on backwards , But that really doesnt sound right either since the gear teeth wouldnt line up with the cam gear teeth . The only thing I can think of is to take a chisel , place it behind the gear , tap it with a hammer & see if you can move it forward enough to get a smaller jaw puller arms behind the gear .

:-X23 I couldn't get this gear to budge so I checked it for run-out and back-lash and it seems OK so I just reused the old gears. I think the only way to get it off would be to pull the crank and press it off in a press. Whoever put this motor together last was a real piece of work. Used a hammer on everything and mixed nuts on the rockers, everytime I work on it I find a new mystery!

I guess I'm coming into this a little late, but if you're going to change the gear anyway, why not drill and tap a couple of puller holes, being careful to keep the chips out of the oil pan, of course. Or even weld a couple of puller tabs onto the gear?

I would also suggest tapping some holes, or if you can weld to it.

If you are going to do it you might as well do it right.

It usually takes a heavy duty 3 jaw puller and a 1/2" impact gun to get a crank gear off. If it's still in the vehicle it can be pretty tough.

when i changed my gears, i just pulled the crank, then tapped the back of the gear with a hammer. once it budged it slid right off. then check, double check, and triple check the gear alignment when ytou put it back together, or you'll end up having to pull the crank again....once it's together it will not come back apart. ask how i know this
