The only thing that works is hight octane gas. The truck is supposed to run on regular so there is something going on. I am starting from scratch. I think where I am going to start is get a good tune-up and get them to use a top engine cleaner on it. Also get the two broken manifold studs fixed get a k&n filter installed and computer reflashed.
I bought my truck new. It has had valve noise since new, it now has 36,000 miles on the clock and still makes the valve noise. Sounds like preignition, very noticable on the drivers side, coming from two or three cylinders closest to the firewall.
Light throttle up to 4,500rpm no noise. But, when getting on it, the noise starts just around 2200rpm, and can last up to 3350rpm.
This can some time be related to the gear I'm in, however, I've been in 2nd and had the same noise while going through the rpms.
I have not tried a higher octane gas, I've only used Chevron 87 since new. Occasionally I've run the "recommended" BP Amoco w/ no change in noise.
And no it's not any kind of ringing, banging or vibrating heat shield related noise. It's definately either floating valves or preignition. The engine is quiet as a mouse when at idle and idles very smoothly otherwise.
I'll say the noise is somewhat less for a while after I've replaced the fuel filter and air filter though.
I have had the same noise in my '96 Roadmaster wagon under similar heavy load, heavy foot conditions. But the engine in this car is known to make that noise due to the EGR valve. As it ages the EGR flutters somewhat causing this exact noise.
I have not looked into whether the '06 V10 has an EGR valve.
I'd be interested to know what the problem is. I do not want to take it to my Ford dealer. Based on past experiences with them concerning 3 Ford vehicles, they in no way shape or form impress me. In fact they plain scare the hell out of me when it comes to diagnosing engine problems, that, and shoddy workmanship. And unless it can be proven not to mess with the HP and Torque, and can be proven to fix the problem, I do not intend to take it in to have the PCM reprogrammed.
I have been quietly sitting on the fence, clearly taking a wait and see attitude. The truck hauls loads of green Oak firewood, and moves its 11,820lb GCVW load (pop up and family w/ gear) w/o a whimper, and gets killer gas mileage in the process.
I know I've overloaded it, but I've put 3000lbs of firewood in the bed, and the truck rides flat, and still hauls but.
Just that one problem with the valve noise under load.

In your owner's manual (around page 266), it states that occasional light knocking is normal. I think the older manuals clarified this further by saying that light knocking under a heavy load (ie towing or hard acceleration) was to be expected.
Bookum-
Is this a brand new truck or did you buy it when new?
I ask because it's very possible that if you bought this truck used that the previous owner loaded some kind of 'performance program' (aka chip/tuner) that requires higher octane fuel.
Well, there could be a physical "chip" plugged into the PCM located behind the plastic kickpanel next to the parking brake.
Or, if a "tuner" was used, maybe a dealership service department could try to read the PCM and see if the program matches any OEM offering. Shouldn't cost more than an hour of shop time for "diagnostics". Of course, a speeding ticket might be cheaper!
