Got the 05 5.4, pulling trailer (9000lbs) was pinging, 89 octane took care of it. Dealer looked at it and no codes or problems. They said it should never ping with the variable valve timing, But it did. Gas is crap these days
It can be a couple things causing pinging.
1)knock sensor not adjusting timing (I had one replaced under warranty on my 02)
2)dirty maf sensor (not reading air flow properly ) causing lean condition but not enough to codes or chk engine light
3)tps sensor (throttle position sensor)
When mine first did it, I had only 500, five hundred, miles on it. On the turnpike getting up to speed. Pulling slight hill, 50=55 mph, and I heard pinging, I played with throttle a bit to confirm it. Not flooring it but going for 70mph, check engine light came on an lost power (fail safe I assume) Pulled over to side and shut off, when started back up no light and all normal. Called dealer Monday, was not sure if code would clear out in time, He said no and when I went in at 3000 miles, no code.
Mine is the 05 5.4
This sevice writer, who called the mech. in to confirm, said then you only need to run 87. All checked out good, I still only run the 89 in it. Didn't check the maf, unsure on knock sensor? Would it throw a code or can they test it? Same on the TPS?
