Hoping to fix ping noise on my 89 f150, 302. I replaced the EGR valve. No help, has anyone got any other suggestions?

Make sure your ignition base timing is set to 10 degrees btdc. Check to insure your getting good fuel pressure, Also does it ping under load or at idle, how many miles on engine? What is the engines state of tune -old or new wires and plugs.

Replaced EGR valve

My truck has a very similar problem, it pings under load. I did my timing last weekend, and it is dead on 10 btdc. Engine has 200,000km on it, but is in pretty good shape.

Someone told me I can try cleaning my EGR valve but I have no idea how to. Where exactly is the valve, I took the cover off once and all I could see in there was a small piston type thing, and it was all very clean.

My plugs are not that old, my wires are 6 months old, and my rotor and cap are ok.

Sorry to steal the spotlight on this topic , this problem has been bugging me for some time also.

Yes. I have checked the timing, new plugs, wires, distributor cap. I notice the ping a lots more, when under a load. Cannot hear it at all when at idel. When toeing boat, it pings with 89 octane. Truck has only got 75k miles. Changing EGR did not help.

Scan the computer for codes.
I had pinging also under heavy loads(just by the A/C kicking on), so I checked the timing first and it was dead on also. I started using higher octane gas and the pinging has pretty much dissappeared. My mechanic said to keep running it with a high octane for a couple of tank fulls and work my way down(on the octane). He says that your EGR valve could be fine but the engine probably has carbon built up inside the EGR valve passages.

As soon as you check the codes like IES says, remember that some of the main causes for engine knock are going to be ignition timing, fuel quality, and engine temp.

Replaced EGR valve

My truck is nearing 120k and I haven't had any problems yet with the EGR. Does anyone know how to clean out the tubing and valve? Just spray gumout carb cleaner down there?

The EGR is the black tube obstructing the spark plugs and exhaust manifold on the passenger side with a big round black plastic thing that looks like a super soaker squirt gun pressure tank in the middle of it right?

Just detach it and spray? or should I get a pipe cleaner and wire and go fishing?

thanks also for the advice...

bassin99 did it ping before you replaced the plug wires?
If not, or even if it did, you might want to check this anyway.
If you replaced the plug wires and did a nice neat job of installing them so they looked all straight and in order that might be your problem. If there are 2 plugs that fire next to each other in the firing order and the wires for them run parallel to each other they can set up an inductive crossfire. On your 302 if the firing order is 15426378 then plug wires #7 and 8 need to be seperated and not parallel to each other anywhere. If they have to be close to each other cross them. Basically just keep them as far apart from each other as you can. On a newer engine or a 351 with the firing order of 13726548 you have to watch #s 6 and 5.
Let us know if this helps.

Now that you mentioned it, this ping problem did start about the time I changed the wires. How much seperation do you think is necessary. I will check it out,and let you know.

I seem to recall that in Ford's TSB on the problem they said 3/4" but the main thing is to not run them parallel to each other.

I checked the wires, and both 7&8 were running parallel with each other. I completely re-routed #7. Gave it a test run, and no change. I appreciate your suggestion, was hoping that easy fix, would work. I guess its back to the drawing board.

Do you drive mainly around town with it?
Your engine may be quite carboned up. Ford sells combustion chamber cleaner that seems to work well.
You could also just try backing the timing off by a couple degrees and see what happens.
Did you install the correct heat range spark plugs? Too hot of plugs can cause a ping too.
Does it use any oil or coolant?

It does not use any oil, or coolant. Don't know about the heat range on the plugs. When I went to the parts store, just asked for plugs to fit my make and model.. Do you think I should use a colder plug?

You usually shouldn't have to use colder plugs.....you just dont want to use hotter than called for.
First I'd try just moving the timing back a couple degrees and see what happens. Then maybe try some combustion chamber cleaner.
