Why must it have drop outs....i don't get it....are you planning on swapping gears every six months...because if you're not why would you want to go with a weaker axle, and why would you give up a full floater just to have drop outs.... i don't get it....

hey previously explianed, if he wants to take the bronco across the country or run it down a drag strip... The drag strip not so much, but i can understand taking it across the country. I think kris was right with the rocks... they are drop outs if i recall correctly, i dont know what its like to find gears for them though...

another thought, is a t case doubler. Could give you the gearing you need. Keep 1 or both in 4 low while wheeling, and youvre got a good gear reduction. Just another idea to consider... Instead of having a drop out rear end.

dude.......rocks 3rd members for 1 are a B***h to get off and they weigh a ton.......not somthing you will do fast (this will be the same for all heavy duty axles).....and gears are not out yet, but when they do come out they are going to be uber $$$$$$

my votes a chromod 60/70 combo.....it will handle more then some rediculously small 9" will.........with that much TQ, you have to think about other things then axleshaft strength.......pinions, housings, diffs......then you have to think about stopping that rediculously large engine......need BIG brakes.....the 9" 1/2 ton chit aint gonna cut it.....

you want somthing that does not exist......a very strong, but light, road worthy, easy to change gears.........your dreamin dude.........your best bet is the 60's, but rocks are a option to, but dont expect to change the ratio unless your rich.........your stuck with 6.72's with rocks

I don't think that having the option to change gears with the drop out will really be as nice as you want to think it will be.

You will still have to pull the axle shafts, remove d shaft, clean dirt away from the dropout mating surface, pull all 10 or whatever nuts from the studs, and get gear lube all over.

I think you should look into a over/under drive of some sort instead.

x2 what he said

the cost would be the same as having 2 extra center sections just layin around plus if you dont soak them or they get droped hit smacked or anything along those lines you have to check it and reset it and then you should have just swapped gears and been done with it. gearvendors overdrive have had great reviews and there are other companies out there. plus you get to double your gears making it great when you need that half a gear.

a doubler isn't a bad idea.

Dude I never said Light or easy But its a heck of a lot easer than any thing else.

Must have drop outs. I'll give up some G-C for a drop out.

I;m just gonna use the this type...1995 INTERNATIONAL 4800 Canton, OH

and scrap/part out what I dont want or need, so I swich um over to disks.

I used to do that type of work for a living, (service jobs and PM's) Before I moved to Houston It's not that hard.

IIRC over/under drives only work in 2wd.

Its still easer to reset a drop out than one with shims. jmo

Aaron,

2 measurements for you.

86 F700 rear axle. bottom of the axle tube to the bottom of the center section is 8 1/2"

07 F550 rear axle (Dana 135 I think) bottom of the axle tube to bottom of the center section is 7 1/4"

D60 is 6" and a sterling is 6 1/2"

Honestly Aaron I thought it would be more. The tubes are also bigger but not an awful lot over a 70/sterling. You will probably be closer to 2 1/2" less clearance when its all said and done but thats not the end of the world. The GF has our camera in her car so Ill make sure to get it and take pics tomorrow.

Even at 3"s, I think I could make it up by swiching out to 22.5 tires.

Heres some I took today just keep in mind that these are from a low deck rollback wrecker...
