Overdrive Button

Guys have a 96 F250 4 wheel drive diesel (E4od tranny). The transmission works and shifts fine (all gears, overdrive and TC) however the overdrive button on the shift lever does not work. Sorta scared to fool with it as I dont wont the tranny to mysteriously start screwing up because I decided to fix the button. Not a big issue because I really dont pull anything but you know one day the occasion might arise to pull it out of overdrive. Anybody messed with these buttons? I assume it pops out some kind of way. If so I was going to put a test light on whatever wires might be there to see if the button is getting power. Does anybody know how many wires are connected to the switch and which are the hot ones. Thanks Maxx

The overdrive shift **** cap can be poped off and the button replaced. You can get them from the dealer or LMC truck has them for 7.95, it comes with the cap and button.

They have tiny little wires that can break down in the steering column where they move everytime you shift the lever. If you take the top and bottom covers off the steering column chances are you will find a broken wire. it pretty easy to just remove the shifter and get the shifter with wiring out of a bench to solder the wires back up. Easy fix.

Are the covers around the steering column fairly easy to remove? Not at the truck so will have to wait till I get home to check. Thanks for the replys Maxx

Three screws form the bottom. one screw on the passenger side hiden behind the dash but if you pull hard enough you can get a driver on it. I usually don't put that one back in! Then once you get the bottom half off you put the key in the ignition turn it to run and on the underside you will see a small hole. poke a pick or punch up there to push in the lock button and pull out on the lock cylinder. Don't turn it while its our either!! Now you have the freedom needed to remove the top half. it tricky at the 4 way flasher button but it will go up over it. then your right where you need to be. It will take 10 minutes or so to remove the plastics.
