Does anyone know how to decipher id tags from a specific ford part like a power steering gearbox? I have one from my 66 f-100 4x4 and I'm sure that it is not original. It works fine but I would like to know what vehicle this came from so I can find another one. The tag reads: SPA AJ1
7 G22C
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ion Kendall

Thanks for the info. I think The tag that was on my 66 f-100 4x4 was switched with a different one (who knows why). I have a 73 f-100 2 wd and the power steering gearbox is completly different. I do however thank you for the info.

I decoded that tag from the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog.
If the two P/S gearboxes are completely different, here's one possible reason why: F Series trucks went from (crappy) Bendix power steering to Ford power steering in early 1969.
So your '66 might have had a Bendix P/S setup added. Look for a cast ID number on the housing. The number will resemble: C7TA-AA.
It's also possible that the gearbox is a later Ford design especially for 4WD's (first offered in 1976). The gearbox looks different, but the seal kits are the same ones I posted above.
And...it could also have Saginaw P/S swapped from a 1975/91 Econoline.
Pictures...we need pictures, that'll tell exactly what it is.
