trade 81 300 six cyl for 240 six

Hi all im looking for a 240 six cylinder for my 65 f-100 i was going to put the 300 six out of a 81 ford 250 custom in it, But decided against it i just want to drop the exact same motor in it. That way everything hooks right up the same way. So if you all need any parts from a 1981 250 custom let me know . oh i also have a 1970 f-250 camper special that id like to trade for a good 240 six , it runs good but freeze plugs poped out. Thanks All Jeff

Jeff, What is the difference in the 81 engine from your 65. They should be the same on the outside.

Popped out freeze plugs usually mean the engine has frozen and likely cracked the block somewhere. I rebuilt a 5.0 a few years back and had to go to a third engine to find one usable.

I dont think the block is cracked but not for sure the oil looks good it fires right up it just leaks water out freeze plug holes. And on the 81 im just trying to swap engines without electronic stuf because im lost with electronic ignition stuff. Do you know if i could just pull out the distributor in the 65 240 six and put it in the 300 six . Thanks and God bless Jeff

240 and 300 uses the same distributor... but if I remember right the electronic ignition used a bigger diameter shaft on the distributor... if so, the distributors won't swap. You should be able to tell by looking externally.

Jeff, the 240 & 300 blocks of the same year are identical, except for the casting numbers. The real difference between the motors is the head (& thats only a slight difference), crank & rods. An '81 300 block will have extra mounting points for emission gizmoz & what-not & thats about it. The only real true way to tell the difference between a 240 & 300 is to measure the stroke. Guys have made a 300 out of a 240 by changing out the crank & rods. All 240/300s use a 5/16" distributor shaft & distributors will interchange, just make sure you have the correct carb, module, coil, etc. to go with the distributor as needed. swann79, what you're thinking of is the smaller six that ford made (144/170/200/250), where ford changed the distributor shaft from 1/4" to 5/16" around '63 or so.

In all reality Jeff, if you have a 300 on hand, you might as well swap it in. 99% of all people will never even know the difference. Hope this helps.
Edwin
