Talking Powertrain Control Module info

Hi

I had my PCM replaced and i'm not happy with it. The "wait to start" lamp remains lit for three seconds and turns off. The vehicle is sluggish to start, but stil starts. Once running everything is fine. The service rep has been over the vehicle twice, only to tell me nothing is wrong with the PCM.

The service rep did tell me that the 1996 PCM was no longer availabe so he put a 1997 PCM in. This 1997 PCM cannot be calibrated to 1996. Does this sound correct?

Is there any way to identify the PCM, while still in the vehicle. If so, where would i find the specific part numbers for the PCM.

Thank you

There should be a number on the PCM itself. Also, (and I'm not if this is what it means), there is calibration sticker either on the door pillar area (driver's side) or under the hood.

I'm not sure if this is an emissions calibration or something else.

I'm no expert on this, but here goes...My understanding is that the 94.5 and 96 PSDs are somehow different than the 97 PSDs. (Neal, Joe, TJ, this would be a good time for you guys to jump in on this conversation.)

The service rep may technically be correct in stating there is nothing wrong with the PCM. I think it is the 97 PCM not playing nice with (I assume) your pre-97 truck. Just because there's nothing wrong with the component, doesn't mean the component is the correct one for your application.

Have you tried your local salvage yard to find a PCM from the same-year truck as yours?

Well this problem was taken to a Ford dealer in Canada. I really don't know what to say. That PCM cost a total of $ 1988.05. Now looking into this, i'm pissed off. I know the PCM is inncorect, but how do i prove it.

Thanks for your help

The PCM they put in is better than the one you had , & they are correct, you can't get the old version unless you went to a salvage yard..The one you have (I have read) has a better glow plug logic.. In your case , it didn't improve starting obviously.. Just so you know, the length of time the WTS light stay's, on is not related to the amount of time the GP's stay on, If you watch your volt meter , you will see it pop up at some point after the GPR shuts off...

You cant go by the WTS light on time, its just a reminder...

I would be a bit ticked at what you had to pay...

Why did you bring it in for repair....

Rick is correct.
Even better would be a Cali code PCM do to it has glow plug monitoring circuit with 180 second max gp on time. (not the norm 120 seconds).
You would have to add some wiring for it and also have a chip to run singles.
If you have singles. Anyone know if Canada is split or single?

The upgrade in DPC family is better. A few things will change with the upgrade. Have you also noticed that you donot have the crappy no tc lock cold problem anymore? It could be the reason you feel the truck is not the same. It RPM's less cold.

The new DPC with an IDM mod and you should have excellent cold starts.
Also has to do with your oil wt.

I would have to look it up. My guess would be a high elevation code. Seems most of the Canada codes are for above sea level. We should have him check it.
BTW- I think 97 was the only year with the monitoring system. Cali F-series and all E-series.

Check your PCM code. Looking under the dash above the accellerator you will see the back of the PCM. The little black cover has the code on it.

Rick
His cost was Canada funds. Wonder what the convert is today to american.

All of you guys are correct. the GP timing and the fact that they don't burn at a certain outside temp. As far as the Canada I would think they are single shots. True about the cali with singles they would need a chip.

I also agree the '97 is a better pcm I can't remember what the other differences are off the top of my head. Not too many I believe other than the GP circuit.

BTW Thanx for the compliment of being classed with TJ and C00n. I am not worthy.

Hi

The reason the vehicle needed a new PCM. well at the shopping mall and it refused to start. It woud turn over but no start. Towed it to the only place close by that I thought was capabable of doing a good job. Was I wrong. They took out my high pressure oil pump, exhaust back pressure sensor PCM and who knows what else.
