I have an '88 F150 4x4 with a 351W fuel injected replacement motor. Not sure where my uncle bought it. I got the truck for free since it needed a rear end put in it. Has about 60,000 miles on the motor. MPG is about 11 right now(was about 9 before I started playin around with it). The only things I have changed so far were new plugs, 8mm wires, 50,000vlt Accel coil, new stock cap and rotor. ON A BUDGET: what can I change to get better gas milage? I did advance the timing to 12.5 degrees. I know the 351W is known as a gas hog. Not expecting a miracle and would be happy if I could get at least 15mpg. Are there any computer mods for this setup and year?
Items considered but a bit pricy for the Christmas season:
K & N Air Filter System
Headers
MSD Ignition System
If you have a stock 4.10 rear end on stock tires... then I'd quit chasing the mpg ghost!
Otherwise... a full tune up with no corners cut can mitigate this issue. Also, a plugged fuel filter, bad o2 sensor, and bunk ECT can ruin your mileage.
If you have a 3.55 or 3.73 rearend... you should be getting 13-15mpg on that motor.
Check the metal tag on the backside of your 8.8 to get your rearend ratio.
what spark plugs are you using? you dont need a complete K&N setup, just run the drop in panel filter and would only cost about 45-55 bucks. headers and new y pipe with hi flow cat would also help but be costly at this time. have you pulled codes?
3.08 rear gears
automatic tranny no OD
Autolite AP 24 Platinum spark plugs gapped at .055
31x10.5 tires (bigger than stock but not by much)
Run a cap on the back during hunting season but to be honest it really doesn't effect the mpg enough to be noticed one way or the other.
No codes pulled. Not familiar with that yet. No way to get that done. Tell me what I need to do to get 'em.

well start by pulling those crap platinum plugs. install some cheap autolite or motorcraft copper plugs. our fords dont like plat plugs search its been discussed alot. Its hard to say if that gear ratio is hurting you at all, might consider some diffs with 3.55 gears in them but your hwy way rpms will suffer more thats for sure.that part is a toss up.
the C6 is a major power hog in stock trim as well. if the tranny is old and tired having that rebuilt ($800 or less) with upgraded hardware would cure that and return power back to the wheels.

what upgrades are we talkin. I need specifics. Not a mechanic here sorry. Just tryin to do as much as possible on my own. I know I cant rebuild the tranny but need to know what to upgrade. Thanks for all suggestions so far they are greatly appreciated.
