When you flip the switch does the A/C default to defrost mode?
If so that is indicative of a vacuum leak somewhere in the system. Could be the connection where the vacuum hoses go into the tops of the knuckles, could be rotten hoses or could be a leak in the hub itself.

this happened to me last month, 4x4 not working, and when i fliped the switch a/c came out the defrost, my lines were good not cracked, and thanks to all on here that helped, it turned out to be my vaccum solenoid.
So with the truck running and the A/C on when you switch to 4x4 it doesn't default to defrost but it isn't locking the hubs, correct?
To answer your question, yes, the hubs are pulled in and locked using vacuum. The vacuum system also works the blend door ebwteen A/C and defrost. If you have a leak in the hub system then the blend door will not stay in the A/C position and will default over.
If yours isn't doing that then I would think that you have some sort of problem with the switch. Maybe someone else can chime in.
If it is like mine and have a slow leak, the only way mine would default to defrost was when the ac was on max and fan on a higher speed. That would cause it to go to defrost as soon as the 4x4 switch was flipped. Still haven't had a chance to trace out the problem. I just locked the hubs last week at the beach and plugged the vac. lines.
I tried seeing the the AC would default to defrost when I flipped the 4x4 switch but nothing happened. The AC still kept blowing ice cold and the truck still won't look the hubs in. My last two F250s auto hubs never worked.. I wish they would but I'm use to them not working by now.
Is there anything else I can check or is it still a possiblity that the vacuum solenoid is not working.. even though my AC doesnt go to the defrost?
Look under the hood on the passenger side and find the vac pump, canister and solenoid. unplug the line going down to the hubs and see if you have vacuum on them. You can use the finger over the hole test.
If you've traced your lines and they are all still intact, than i would just buy a new solenoid and throw it in there to be sure. It seems to be a relatively common problem and the answer usually tends to be the vac solenoid. If it's not, at least you'll have a spare around for when it does go bad. good luck!

How do you know if it defaults to defrost or not?
Leave it running and see if its cold or hot?

When mine was doing it it would start blowing air from the defrost vents soon after switching into 4x4. After I switched back to 2x4 it would come back to A/C after a while and then after a few months it wouldn't switch back at all. That's when I replaced all of the lines and the solenoid.
