Today my computer locked up and made a long beeeeeeep sound.
Nothing would respond to input, mouse curser locked up, keyboard non-responsive.
I turned it off at the power bar and waited a few minutes, then attempted to re-boot.
Now all the computer will do is make a sound like a British ambulance: a high/low/high/low continuous beep signal with nothing on the screen whatsoever. The monitor thinks the computer is still turned off, it won't come on at all.
Video card? It's the second one that I had to buy for this one, the first one locked up.
Motherboard?
Any ideas?
What is the exact beep pattern? Long, short duration of each beep, etc? The system will let you know the problem with that. Its almost always going to be ram or video... the motherboard generally needs to work in order to run the diagnostics and sound the beeps.
Long continous beep with the tone alternating between high and low every second. will continue to make that tone until I cut the power at the power bar.
The monitor never shows any signs of life at all.
Thanks for any ideas you might have.
Thanks for the help, Ken.
Without pulling the cover off, I think I have an Award bios, they are the only ones that list this symptom.
Repeating High/Low CPU Either the CPU is not seated properly or the CPU is damaged. May also be due to excess heat. Check the CPU fan or BIOS settings for proper fan speed.
This computer has given me trouble with lockups since I built it a few years ago.
I went all out, water cooled and everything.
Looks like I'm going to get a new motherboard, CPU and a couple gigs of ram.
