Does anyone know how to back up files from the hard drive after the computer dies? Here is the back gound. I have a Toshiba laptop the just stopped working. It appears to have a problem with the motherboard. It is covered by a protection plan but I was told to backup all my files before sending it in for repair. It won't turn on now so how do I back up my files?
If you have a problem with the motherboard, hopefully, your data is still o.k. on the hdd and the motherboard didn't 'fry' the hdd when it became 'toast'.
Update. I just tried to start my computer on the battery only and got it to start and load. I went and grabbed a cd to start backing up files and it shut off again. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong?
I can send it in for repair but would like to save my files first.
Do you have to "send" it in for repair?......Can you take it in?......If you take it in, maybe they can do a 'backup' before fixing it.....Maybe one of them "GeekSquad" dudes can help.....
Best bet is to follow BlueOvalRanger's suggestion. Jack it into a PC (have a friend help, etc), and then move the files. No software needed. It will be listed as another harddrive on a desktop PC. You can step up the connection and get something like this: http://www.drivesolutions.com/cgi-bi...s2&itemid=enc2
Drop your laptop harddrive into the enclosure
Plug it into a USB port on another computer
Back up all you want
Easier to use than the link from BlueOval as you do not need to open your computer to plug this one in.
If you don't, you won't get them back after repairs. They don't care about what is on the PC, and they will more than likely put in a different HDD or reload the one that's there back to factory spec.
You can keep trying, but it really sounds like that PC should not be powered on or attempted. Popping from an electrical device is not a good thing.
