I want to put a new exhaust on my 85 6.9 f250 single cab. I wanna run duals from the manifold back to stacks. Can I do that or do I have to have a y-pipe and a stacks kit? Can I run 4" or 5" pipe from the manifold?
the simplest and less expensive is to install a "balance pipe"........it goes right behind the header collector from one side to the other side of the exhaust.............make sure to make surface joints (nothing sticking inside the pipes)......next is to use exhaust wrap on the headers all the way back to the collector.....................
the "best" and most expensive and complicated is a "X" design.............this design make it a "bitch" to do any under vehicle work in the future.......................
personally, for a "street vehicle", I most likely would go with the simple balance pipe..............and exhaust wrap
Kevin, if you decide to make this this change...........I need a little more info about your exhaust system.......
For other people that have installed duels..........you "need" the balance pipe as well....................
before any one ask, I am not trying to reduce exhaust restriction.........I am trying to take "advantage" of the sonic reversion pulse that travels in reverse of exhaust flow..........
to be fair, I can not say that we can tune the sonic reve

This is a post from crossbones2 in the thread USING GLOW PLUGS, I think you need the x-over pipe. This is post 200 or so on that thread if you want to put it in context
Yes there is a place called Stan's Headers that makes headers for the IDI engine, both 6.9 and 7.3 use the same headers.
Yes, the front fuel tank extends up under the cab and about fills the area between the frame and the drive shaft.
That is about the most common method of installing stacks.
You can rebuild the stock exhaust using larger pipe from just below the manifold connection.
Then dump them together into a 3 or 4 inch pipe.
One 90 degree elbow turns the exhaust up into the bed.
Word of caution, if you haul stuff in the bed, use something to prevent contact with the stacks. They get very hot while driving.
that is sharp.i talked to a guy today and he said he would run straight pipes out the back no muffler with 3 inch pipe for $225 i thought that was perty good. i like your stacks alot.
if you want to run duals with a x pipe dynomax sells a muffler with a built in x pipe it will cost you about 130 though, but its alot easier than making a x pipe that will get in the way of everything specially if you have a 4x4
