I ordered a set of 5" miter cut stacks off of ebay and the rest of the piping from black cloud diesel. I have everything I need and I can't wait to install them. The kit hooks right into the stock 3.5" exhaust pipe below the rear of the cab. With the relatively small exhaust pipe and restrictive down pipe, will there be a noticeable performance increase with the stacks? How hard is it to replace the down pipe with a larger one, and how much will it cost? I'm not expecting much gain, I got the stacks for the look and the sound.
Thanks,
Kevin
I'm with 97, get the downpipe and you will feel a difference. Also get rid of cat and muff if you can or havn't allready. They say 25 hp gain with downpipe alone. No its not to hard to install. Do a search on downpipe and you shoudl come up with something that tells you what to do or check out Steve Baz's site.
Another Vote here for a new downpipe. I would at least get rid of the cat too muffler not to bad restrictive but I'm straight pipe 4inch and love it. I'm running tymar exhaust give dale a call is very helpful on anything.
Heres a question a bit off topic what kind off reaction do you get with stacks on your truck. Do people like em or hate em. To me they look cool but to thers who noes. I suppose people would be trying to race my truck when they got next to me. Im not a showoff an maybe the stacks would make me look cocky. Im not tha kind off guy.
I must be an odd ball or something. I noticed no differnce when I did my 3" DP on the '97, although I was already cat less, and had the 5" side pipes, and the open element. the '96 still has the stocker in it. pulls, boost, revs, and EGT's are the same as the '97.
how many of you did the DP AND the cat delete at the same time???? I noticed a HUGE difference from the Cat delete. maybe thats what we're all noticing. Not saying the DP isn't restictive, it is. but I think a stock injectored truck it isnt needed.
the right stacks wont give the cockey look. I think the '97 has a very refined look to it, as they are hid pretty well from the side and front. not obnoxiously high.
now the '96, thats different I want that one to have a mean look to it.

i'm with dieselrod here, i cut the muff and cat out at the same time but long before getting a DP and noticed a huge difference. then when i finally got around to putting the DP in i didn't notice hardly any difference. i was expecting more! although she does seem to talk to me a lil louder.
on edit... definitely get the DP, not saying not to just saying i dont thin kit makes as much of a difference as everyone thinks
the largest difference by adding a 3" round dp (or in my case a 4"dp) is cutting down on the exhaust gas temps. there will also be a slight increase in hp because of opening up the flow a little

I get great reactions from my pipes. I've always got guys walking around my truck to see if they are really hooked up. And when I pop the throttle and the belch black smoke, everyone is all grins. And yeah, everyone wants to race. Some don't even know it.....that's the kind of guy I am. I refer to it as "chasing bad guys" when the wife asks why I'm haulin' azz.
Wittmer, installing the downpipe is not bad with the right tools. Without the right tools it can be a nightmare. You have cut the stock dp about 4 or 5 inches behind the turbo with a sawsall. I've heard alot of people say "it ate like 5 or 6 blades and was so hard to cut." I used the milwalkee Torch blades. It ate though it like butter. Next you have to cut and bend the weld seam on the firewall. After cutting two slits wide enough apart to compensate for the dp, I used a port-a-power duck bill to bend the firewall back. My bending was done in about a minute. Block of wood on the tranny, couple of pumps from the port-a-power, bingo, room for the down pipe. Definatly do it when you do your stacks, and get rid of the kitty and muffler. You'll love it I promise.
down pipe is easy and as for people likin the stacks they LOVE em around her there are only 10 trucks i know of with stacks so its kind of rare and people stare like crazy the best is when your at the local hot dog joint and someone is really close to the stacks and there lookin bein all nosey and u jump in the truck and crank it up the look is amazing HAHAHA
