free oil change = transmission problems

Took my truck in for an oil change to a place because I had a coupon. Go to pick it up and when the transmission is in drive it won't shift out of first.

The truck was working fine before I took it in(I was thinking it was working perfect but on a couple of cold mornings the transmission did seem to hesitate a bit). The guy at the shop said they didn't do anything but change the oil and filter. I topped up the fluid and it didn't make any difference.

Seems very fishy to me that it mysterious happened overnight. Anybody have any ideas of what could be causing the problem short of the transmission being shot.

It doesn't seem to idle as well in gear. Reverse, first and second seem to work. The 460 motor and c6 trans are out of a 78 lincoln so the shifter is on the floor. The truck it is in is a 75 F250 4x4 crewcab.

Somebody give me some ideas. Anything they could have done that would cause the problems. Any simple things I should check first.

Like Jmudder79 says maybe check vacuum line. Other than that it is just a coincidence. No way that an oil change messed up your transmission.

Thanks for the info. Were is the modulator located? Passenger side of the trans? Or on top? Metal or rubber line?

Anyone have pictures?

Unless the oil change place happens to specialize in costly transmission repairs, I seriously doubt they had anything to do with your current problem, aside from the fore mentioned vacuum line, or an oopsie of being nice and topping off your transmission with something like brake fluid.

My guess is that if you fix/replace that vacuum line that the particular problem you just developed will go away. Your transmission however, does have morning sickness. The fix for that is to take the valve body out, disassemble, clean, slap in a $15 trans-go shift-improver kit, reassemble, new filter, fill, and be merrily on your way. While you have the pan off, I would strongly recommend adding a drain plug. If you want to really get fancy, install an inline transmission fluid filter, an external cooler, and a temp gauge.

Oh, and when you take your valve body out, put the bolts into a piece of cardboard in relation to where they came out, its important they go back where the came from. The trans-go shift kit will have a diagram on where all of the ball bearings go back. Set the Ebrake and chock the wheels too, incase you didn't already plan on it.

I'd consider that they may have accidently put engine oil in your transmission.. apparently a Walmart did that to a cousin of mine, he didn't find out until he took it in to get it serviced.. the Walmart, surprisingly enough, paid to fix the transmission.

whenever something like that happens to me I always ask "can you fix it?" immediately, if they enthusiasticly say "yes", then I would suspect something is going on.

I have heard that most lube it up type places are very quick to deal with problems caused by alleged use of incorrect fluids, incorrect quantities, or missing parts like drain plugs.
