Yes there is a drain plug. Remove the inspection grommet on the bellhousing and rotate the crank pulley by hand until you see it through the hole. You can also remove the fuel pump relay and have someone bump the ignition until it lines up.
If you drain the converter and the pain then it should take around 12-14 quarts of ATF. You should fill it up in small increments (3-4 quarts), and running the truck through the gears between fills, until around 12 quarts. Then start going quart by quart and checking the dipstick. There's a good write-up here:
where do you get to this? when i did mine, i dropped the pan and didn't see much else other than the filter. seemed like i'd really have to dig in somewhere to get anything else out. pics, good explanation? i assume it after i take the pan off?
useless now that i'll already dropped the pan and filled it, but its good info for the future
Its on the bell housing Tom, FORWARD of the pan. You don't need to drop the pan to access it. There is a round rubber grommet about 2" in diameter, pull that out and you've got a direct view to your torque converter. Rotate her around a bit and you'll see the tiny drain plug. I'll take a picture when I get home.
tomtoc, most of the fluid is in the convertor and if you did not drain it than you need to service your trans again.
i knew that. more of a learning experience than anything. the 6+ quarts i got out looked pretty good. i'll prob give it a while before i do it again. had the fluid looked bad, i would be more concerned. i got it at 52k miles. it's got 60 on it now, just trying to keep up on service. and have a point to start from. ...i'll do it again someday
Lol, live and learn Tom. You probably bought yourself some time by exchanging some of the fluid for fresh stuff... But 6 quarts is really only a fraction of what the e4od holds... So like quicklook said, do another fluid change sooner than later.
