HEI install problems

just installed a procomp hei dist. in my 78 f150. it starts and runs but has no power when i accerlerate and backfired through the carb. Is the problem with the wiring? I used the ign. on wire that ran to the ignition modual. Is my timing off? or is the problem hit the dissy itself?

If you're backfiring throught the carb it sounds like you're ignition timing is off some. Did the same thing on my 79 F 150, 400m, C6,4x4.

I would run a larger wire to the + side of the distributor. I would run a 14 ga wire from a 20A relay triggered by the power you are using now. I agree also that your timing is off. Either you initial is too high, or your advance curve is way off for your application. Try disconnecting your vacuum advance(if you have one) and also advancing and retarding your timing, report any differences.

My timing marks are gone so I have it timed more or less by ear at the moment. Adv. the timing and it and stopped the backfiring. Still stalled/hesitated slightly when giving her throttle from a rollin or dead stop though. It gets less if i adv. the timing more but then starts pinging. I have it adv. as far as i can now without it pinging. Any ideas on the stalling/hesitation?

Yes, start with fixing your timing!! I don't know how you could "loose " your mark, it is etched into the harmonic balancer. Take a putty knife + wire brush to the dampner, scrape all of the old crap off, paint black, and use a white paint pen, chalk, whatever, to mark where the timing is supposed to be set at.

otherwise, to answer your question, read up on timing+carbureation adjustments.

You might be off on the firing order. Also the ProComp wants a full 12 v source. Original equip. used a resistor to limit current.
