HEI Question

I have 1974 F250, the motor is a 390 with a points distributor.
I'd like to upgrade to an HEI.

On my 1969 Mustang I had to replace the ignition PINK resistor wire (6v) to a 12v wire up to the coil for a Mallory Unilite Dist.

Do I have to do the same with the 1974.

How would you suggest to run the wiring for the HEI?

Thank You!

I'm interested, but don't really have anything to add. Hopefully someone chimes in soon.

Hmmm… I have a ’67 Mustang that had a (stock) 200 I6. I found a complete rebuilt/running 289 that had the HEI distributor/setup on it. I swapped that in to the Mustang and simply ran my stock ignition wire to the HEI unit. (I didn’t replace any of the stock wires.) It’s been running fine for years, but now with your post I’m wondering if my install is correct.

During this thread, you will get pros and cons for going to HEI. I did and the sole reason was because of dealing with the rat cluster of wires on my truck. That said, I love it. All components in one location cleans up the engine bay. You only need to have two wires going to this unit. A 12v source that will shut off with the key off and a 12v source that will come on and off with the starter (this one should be located on the I post of the starter solenoid). You may also need a different gooseneck and air filter assembly to get the HEI to fit.

.. or just use the module for the ultimate in shade tree adaptation: Junk Yard Genius.com 'Stealth HEI Page

Make it easy on yourself, take a key on hot that stays on when you start your truck. Run that to a relay. Then run fused battery current from your battery to the relay, then to your hei module. You need to use 14 ga wire for this.

I'm assuming that this will provide the 12v when the starter is running? BTW, I love the fab work you do.

Remember that the 74 did not have wiring for the ignition modules that I believe was used on the 1975 and up, so I don't think I could HIO Silver suggestion.

I would like to use the 12v wire hook up to ignition OR what about the Petronix Dist upgrade (I think I spelled that right)???

MAIN question- Does anyone know that the 1974 ignition power source to coil is a resister wire?????

Thank you. And exactly. Most hei's require more juice then the stock ignition circuit provides, hence the relay.
