my father-in-law is trying to remove the fuel pump from his truck(its leaking). he said he has all of the bolts out and the lines removed, and says the only thing holding it to the engine now is the rod that drives it. he cannot figure out how to remove it says the rod is hanging him up and preventing him from removing the pump. anyone got instructions on removing the pump?
Lift the pump straight up and the rod will come out with it. Turn the engine over with a socket and the cam will lift it up helping to prevent the rod from falling into the engine.
make sure you turn the front of the crank with a socket and ratchet 24 or 27 mm IIRC. or use the starter. if its stuck that bad there is a possibility the poppet for the pump can fall down into the motor. not good its happened before.
There's an o-ring type seal on the pump body that seals to hole in the block, so there's some drag on the pump keeping it from pulling up easily. When I did mine, I rolled the crank with a ratchet to let the cam lift the pump as high as possible as suggested to reduce the chance of losing the tappet. Once at that point I used a small pry bar under the pump fastener locations to wiggle the pump straight upward while gently pulling with my other hand. My new pump had a new tappet already installed. Hope that helps.
