I bought a 1987 Ford with a fuel problem. The last person who owned it said he was driving along and it just quit on him. He parked it for 2 years then i bought it. I found that the fuel pump on the frame had no power to it and I jumped it from another power source. It ran then. A week later I removed the front fuel tank. It was in bad shape. Carried on for another week. Then the rear tank started to leak. Removed and found a fuel pump in it. I checked the pump on the test bench and it work fine. Re-installed in tank but didnt work. But I noticed that the fuel gauge didnt work either, only when it got down to 1/4 tank did it move. But also checked the fuel selector on the dash and it had no power to it . So I jumpered out the fuel selector with another power source and now the pump runs in the tank. The sending unit in the tank is new.
Does anyone know if there is something Im doing wrong here or Im missing something. Fuses are all good. Roll over switch is good, unless theres 2 in there.
Thanks out there.
Check your fuel pump relay. It runs power to the intertia switch under the dash next to the clutch pedal. Then from there it splits power to the tank selector switch and the frame rail pump. You can check the wiring to be sure it is ok, but it does sound like the relay. The pumps that are in the tank are low pressure pumps, and the frame pump is the one that gets pressure up enough for EFI.
Thanks for the info. And you are right. I dont have power at my inertia either. But, where is the fuel pump relay located in the truck. I have no idea. Thanks. Bill.
The relay should be attached to the air filiter housing under the hood. There should be 2 relays there, one is the computer relay and the other is the fuel pump relay. Double check that you get 12V power to the yellow wire with the key on. One wire should have 12V for about a second after you turn the key on, which comes from the computer. If you have both of those, and no output from the relay, then the relay is faulty. Good luck.
Back to the problem. I found the fuel relay and checked it. On the yellow wire I only have 4.7 volts. Only when the key is on, and it stays at 4.7 volts. The fuel relay seems to work okay. It doesnt come on when the key is turned on, only when the engine is running. The fuel gauge doesnt move even when I unplug it. There is no power at the inertia when the key is on or off. Only when the engine is running do I get power there, and its only 4.7 volts again. I guess I just have some bad wiring in there some where. Oh well. Ill run it as it is. Thanks . Bill
It's only rear abs, and they aren't too great, but yes it's there. It does sound like there are some wiring issues. Hope you can get things sorted out.
The only one I know of is down temporarily for updates, but you can keep trying it. I'd get a Haynes manual, as it is pretty detailed, and doesn't cost too much.
