weird fuel problem !!

A friend of mine has a 1972 xlt with a 360 engine. it stalls on him from time to time and he has changed all electrical, battery, cables, etc. and didnt fix the problem.......
anyway, im riding with him in it just now and it stalls going down the road. We coast to the side and he tries to crank it and it will not start. I open the hood and open up the throttle to see if gas is going into the carb and it appears to shoot some gas so I figure the accelarator pump is working. He has a see through inline gas filter going to the carb and it doesnt have hardly any gas in it. I show him that there is hardly any gas in the see through fuel filter then, all the sudden, gas starts to kinda "bubble" into the filter while we were standing there just looking at it. I told him to try to crank it and after it turned over a few times it fired right up. Any guess as to why this would happen? I would say fuel pump but he now thinks that is what his problem has been from day one. But if it is the pump, would it cut out like that then just begin the work again? Any ideas?

If the pump has been replaced, then I'd look at ALL the rubber lines to see if they are new/old. There is one piece under back of cab between frame and fuel tank line and the one at the pump. If questionable? Then replace them, as they will get a small piece broke loose INSIDE and it will suck itself shut and won't allow fuel to pass until you shut truck off and let the vacuum to decrease enough.

Also, check to see what kind of gas cap he's running. It needs to vent also so if it's sealing tight the pump won't be able to suck any more fuel until it again releases some vacuum allowing fuel to be drawn by pump. Take a straw and draw some fluid thru it, then put your finger over the end and try, nothing huh? Same principal.

I will let him know.
As far as gas caps go, he did have a gas cap that had "vacuum pressure" on the chrome cap at one time. Now he bought a new correct NOS cap for his model. I have read that there are differences in gas tanks for some specific models, so I guess he has the right cap on his now. Any other suggestions while we are at it anyone?

Check to see if the fuel line is laying on the intake manifold or close to the exhaust manifold. Vapor lock acts this way.

well, maybe i found it. I took the line loose from the gas tank behind the seat, then took the line going into the fuel pump off and blew the line out with 120 pounds of air. Got some trash out of it. I then took the line loose from the fuel filter and ran a hose from the "in side of the fuel pump and tried to blow it out that way and got nothing. I then blew the other end out with air and gas and dirt came flying out of it! I hooked everything back up and it fired right up and the fuel filter is plum full of gas. My buddy is happy! Thanks for the input guys and I guess if it cuts off on him again we will just put on a new fuel pump.

I am having similar issues and am almost certain it is the same fuel issue. Wishing it would cool down a bit so I could spend some time working on it. Great advice above as always!

Y'all know...of course (or maybe not even tho I've typed this same info well over 200 times here on FTE )...that as original...there is a CARTRIDGE fuel filter inside the fuel pump.

Most ppl do not know it's there, so they install an inline fuel filter instead.

And...because most ppl do not know it's there, it rarely gets changed...if ever.

The cartridge fuel filter fits inside a tomato juice sized can that threads onto the fuel pump.

C4AZ9365B .. Cartridge Fuel Filter (Motorcraft FG1A) / Available from Ford and autoparts stores.

Fits: 1964/72 F100/350 all V8's, some I-6's / 1962/72 Passenger Car V8's, some I-6's.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The I-6's also have a fuel filter located on the pump. Some are the same as above, some are much smaller and fit inside a glass bowl, so it's visible for all to see.

good advice numberdummy, but my friends truck doesnt have the canister type fuel pump in which you are refering to. His has another type of after market fuel pump which only the in and out fuel lines run.

OK, but the burning question is, where's all that crud coming from. Gotta be the gas tank. You may want to run it real low and then take it aout and try to flush it our real good with soapy water. Clean out all the junk you can and then dry it bone dry before reinstalling it. That might help but if its full of rust it'll just happen again.
