On my 87 XLT, I have a 4sp manual (tranny code is 19 on the sticker) and it makes this slight grinding or whining sound which becomes totally silent once the clutch pedal is pushed down to the floor. It also has a loud click when the pedal is rising up from the floor and is fairly hard to shift into gears. Not long ago I just had a slave cylinder explode on me leaving the pedal stock to the floor. The slave cylinder and clip was replaced and wondering if the shop shouldve noticed and made repairs to these problems mentioned above while they did the slave cylinder and clip repairs. Does it sound like these noises may cause another failure of the slave cylinder again? Thanks in advance.
It sounds to me like a pocket bearing noise, or a front bearing. If you are adventurous, I would recomend going to the junkyard and finding another T-19 trans, and rebuild it. This could be a good opportunity to drop in a 5-sp also. The ZF 42-series transmission made it's way behind small blocks from about 95 on, in heavy 250's and 350's. This tranny has a low first gear, and an overdrive, plus it is set up to take a hyd. throwout bearing.
Ops, I made a mistake in my original post. My trans code is "B". I believe that is the NP435 I think. If anyone knows what I should check or replace to eliminate the above problems, I would be greatly appreciative, thanks.
Am I correct to understand that the Repair shop Did not replace the clutch??? The fluid would ruin the surface! I would have them double check their work, although they're gonna get some more money out of ya'

If his slave cylinder is like mine (85), it is external to the bell housing.
Well it sounds like it could be a couple of things clutch, syncronizers in the tranny, or throwout bearing. You should look into these. What sounds are comming with the tranny in neatural?
Thanks Burton. The noise basicaly just sounds like normal engine idling and seems completely normal. But once I push in the clutch pedal, I notice a significant sound reduction. The RPMS ofcourse remain the same (as all I am doing is pushing in the pedal) but the normal idle sound, or what I thought was the motor idling, becomes much quieter. I dont know much about tranny's and clutches, but is there perhaps something that rotates with the motor, and then is released when I push down the clutch pedal? Thanks
Thanks BillyB, I'll try that. Do you happen to know what the tranny code is for the t18 tranny? On my door sticker, my tranny code is "B" and I just cannot find any info as to what tranny the "B" is. In addition to the sythetic oil suggestion, I am open for any other ideas and suggestions if anyone can help out. Thanks.
my t18 had a series of numbers and letters that had t18 in the string right on the transmission. if it is a 435 it will say new process on it. if first gear is synchronized and it says borg warner, it is a t19.
I don't know the code!! but if you have a granny low first gear, it has to be one of these.
