I have a 99.5 7.3L. I did the hutch mod after doing the HX crossover, and the fuel line connect kit from dino fuels, and to tell the truth, I don't notice hardly any difference in sound levels. Has anyone else experienced this? All I hear about is people raving about not having to turn thier trucks off to order food at the drive through after doing these mods, but I still have to. The kit I bought was from diesel innovations. Let me know what you think.
How many miles have you driven since the install? I didn't notice a real difference til after ~80 miles. Remember, all the air in the system needs to get worked out. I really noticed difference cruising on the highway. I hope you harpooned it while you were in there.
Except for running 100% bio, I don't know what else I can do to quiet my truck. It is a lot quieter but I stil shut it off the other day at the bank drive through. It's a diesel. Drive it for a while and see what happens. I can get by, but why yell, it is a diesel truck.

The instructions sheet that came with my kit stated that it may take a tank or more before the air is out of the system and the engine quiets down.
Did mine about three tanks ago, with the HPX cross-over and it is definitely quieter.
Only the helper pump adds a little to the noise level now.
Notwithstanding, if the engine does not quiet down FixrUpr may want to...
As per Kwikordead
And I definatly recommend pulling the VC's and retorquing the rocker arm pedastals and fuel injectors. Half of the bolts will take some tightening and all the injectors will. It will result in a tighter sounding engine on the freeway.
Personal experience talking here.
Wait, did you get the CCK or the Hutch? I have both on mine, but I got the Hutch kit from ITP and it definitely made a difference. For the Hutch you have to drop the tank, for the CCK from DFA you install fuel lines on the ends of the fuel rails on the heads and connect them to the return line. I did the CCK first, but the Hutch still made a big difference.
empiretc: I did do the harpoon while in there. Great mod!
Tenn01: I know its a diesel and its supposed to be loud, but when I hear all these raves about how quiet everyone's trucks are after doing the in-tank, I was surprised to notice not much difference.
arjr111: Thanks, I haven't heard of that one, will definately try it.
Izzy351: I got the in-tank kit from Diesel Innovations which is exactly like the one from ITP but without the return line kickout. I just cut the rubber line that curled back into the mixing chamber and re-attached it so that it was aiming straight up to keep the return fuel away from the pick-up. I also did the HP oil crossover line and the fuel port connect kit from DFA. I think I'm going on around 2 tanks as of now(its been a while since I did it and havent put as many miles on her as usual lately), so I'll give it a little time and see what happens. I think I will go with an air dog eventually and see how that does.
Thanks again guys and let me know if you have anything to add.
Okay, well you mentioned the Hutch in the title and only the HPX & CCK from DFA. Wanted to be sure...
Mine took about 10 minutes of running time to notice the difference. If you're on the second tank, that was PLENTY of time to get the air out, unless you have another leak someplace. The thing about the return sticking straight up is that when the tank gets low, it'll be raining fuel right down where the pickup is, so it may stir things up again. Should only be a problem when it gets low though.
The other thing is that I notice the difference much more when it's warmed up. When it's cool, it's pretty loud, like it used to be. When I switch back to syn after this OC with dino, I think it may quiet it down some when cool.
EDIT: And it's funny that you mentioned having to turn off the truck to order food. The first place we went after I got the mods done was Sonic, and it was when I had the window down getting ready to order that I realized it was so much quieter.
Yeah, thats the only real reason I want the truck a little quieter, well that and the fact that it was air in the lines that was supposed to be causing some of the noise which isnt a good thing. It seems a little better after I just switched to Rotella T syn. I did notice when I drained the pan though, that when I pulled the bucket full of oil out, there was a lot of foam in the bucket. Is that normal from it falling in the bucket or do I need to start adding anti-foam to the oil? Off topic I know.
I don't believe that you need to worry about the foam issue with the Rotella-T synthetic. What you saw was probably a combined result of the condition of your old oil and the hydraulic dynamics of it draining into the bucket.
alright, cool. I figured it might be from draining. Although, I did notice some foam or tiny bubbles on the dipstick when I checked the oil the other day. What do you think about that? Thanks for the replies
