Do the speedo and tach work flawlessly................ Check fuses, what color is the FIPL/TPS on the IP.... have the truck/trans checked for codes at Azone free...... report back with codes.

The E4OD was never offered behind a 6.9L diesel, 1987 was the last year ford used the 6.9. Was the engine swapped?

And are you sure its an E4OD, and not a C6 3 speed?

if its a 89 truck it could have a e40d, and it should have had a 7.3, someone prob just swapped the engine due to cavitiation.

In both cases it may be just unfamiliarity with the vehicle and components....

Yes it should be an E4OD .. 3 speed plus OD..should have an E on the door post label under trans.

7.3 external identification variance from 6.9 - New fuel filter/fuel heater/water separator, larger/taller cylinder head bolt bosses with ribs.

Cylinder head bolts - 6.9 = 7/16
Cylinder head bolts - 7.3 = 1/2"
