knocking

I have a question to ask....Does it sound like a low end knock? My 88 Chevy G20 service truck knocks upon startup, but it's fuel/timing related.(octane knock). My brother-in-law's old 89 bronco knocked upon startup...his bearings were shot.

Replace your junk oil filter with a Motorcraft. This works, really. Try partially filling it before putting it on. I used to be a die-hard Wix fan, until a friend finally convinced me to do this(the parts store didn't have Wix!). Now, all I run in my truck, my girlfriend's car, and any Ford I work on are Motorcrafts. It also got rid of the lifter tap on startup in my girlfriend's Escort. Also, on your next oil change, substitute a half- quart of Lucas oil treatment. This helps, too.

I've been using Fram, I know u guys shun this lol, but mine does it too, seems to have to do with older oil, and being an older engine 168,000 miles. Goes away after a few seconds though.

My old six knocks some on startup, generally goes away pretty quick, however, have always used Motorcraft filter. The engine does however, have over 200,000 miles so a little knocking is expected.

I recall reading a tech bulletin from Ford about the knock in the 300 six. I believe the solution was more frequent oil & filter changes especially on high mile units. I judge my oil changes by the knock. If I start more than 2 to 3 times a day and hear the knock, time for a change. This method has me changing oil every 2 months or so. I also run heavier oil in summer (15w40) and lighter in winter (10w30).

The noise you are hearing may be caused by dry starts.
The motorcraft filters do not have an anti drain back valve in them, over night the oil drains back to the pan causing the knocking whjen the engine runs for a few minutes with no oil. i have 114,000 om my 94' it does the same thing. dump the motorcraft filters theres a reason they cost 2$, purolator and fram both make filters for the 4.9 with drain back valves also put in a court of lucas oil treatment and try syn oil. the filters run about 6$ but its worth it the noise should go away.

my 300-6 has about 230,000miles on it. I have never used the motorcraft filter and have never had the nock (infact theres a delco filter on it now... ). But if the motorcraft filter dosnt have an anti-drain back valve then its worthless junk. Your enigine will thank you for using a filter whith the valves.

Just a thought, check your fan blade and wiggle it to see if your water pump bearings are not on the way out. My water pump bearings started knocking and I thought it was the lower end. The pump finally went to heaven when I was in the back woods trout fishing. I limped to a main road and spent the next 8 hours getting parts and fixing the thing on the side of the road.

After I replaced the pump the knock was gone.

I have used only the cheapest filters available and have never had a knock.

Motorcraft Filters are made by Purolator, or at least they were the last time I bought one... Fram is absolute total junk... They have a plastic drainback valve that's about as good as nothing...
I have NEVER seen a filter without a drainback valve, but, I suppose it is possible...

So tell me this, if Motorcraft filters have no anti-drainback valve, why did they fix the knocking on the last three 300-6's I have picked up? I had one out of an 80 F-100, never been rebuilt, with over 100k on it, knocked like crazy on startup. Replaced the filter, and added 1 qt of oil. After priming the filter, I let it sit all day. Started it that night, with no knock. If that's what a lack of a drainback valve does, then that's what I'll use.
