I got a horrible clunking/knocking in the front end of my pickup this morning, jerking the steering wheel like a flat tire, and after a couple miles it stopped..... bearing ???
the 4 x 4 is disengaged by VACUUM.. If you get a leak in the hose, or the IWE is "sticking", you can get one front wheel stuck or partly engaged in 4 x 4.. disassemble and clean.. see attached post below.
It has made some metal on metal clunking noise as well as progressively gotten worse as far as the jerking of the wheel. My upper control arm looks a little worn as does the bushing so I'm going to start with that and work my way to the u-joint....... thoughts???
jack the front tires off the ground an inch with a floor jack under the lower A frame... With motor OFF, the wheel will be locked in 4 x 4.. if you try to turn it, the axle half shaft will turn, and the front drive shaft will turn.......... Start the motor, leave truck in park, and again try to turn the front wheel.. Should be DISENGAGED and in 2 x 4.. wheel will turn, axle and driveshaft will not.

I had a 2002 Ranger that did this when I turned the wheel while turning into my driveway and it was a control arm.
