Well, I'm out of the woods and the fires in my area look like they are completely out with the exception of the Castaic fire which is miles from me. Thanks to all who were concerned and the numerous phone calls I received to see if myself and the family were OK. I can't explain the relief of knowing that hopefully the fires in my area are gone. Although I'm OK, I'm still concerned for my friends in the fire areas and pray for their safety as these fires are put out. I also want to express my appreciation for the fire department who had to be away from their families to help protect everyone elses. I think I'm so thankful that I'll go ahead and purchase that rear disc brake conversion I've been wanting for sometime and just sit and work on my truck in my garage. LOL...

It's good to hear you and yours avoided the disaster. We are still praying for or other friends out there, especially in the San Diego area. They are not out of the woods yet for sure.

It's also good to see that you are starting to feel like your old self again !
Fox News reported that some A-wipe was caught setting a fire up in the hills. Saw him from a helicopter and nailed him. They also reported the FBI had a memo to be on the lookout for; you guessed it- terrorists involved in something like this!
It wouldn't surprise me because this is exactly the kind of thing they would try, seeing as how airport security has ramped up.
I'm in no way suggesting they have done this, but it just seems to be covering too much area to be random. In ww2 the Japanese sent balloons aloft to try to catch the gulf stream and ride to the west coast and start fires. I have no idea how they were supposed to crash and burn, tho, but it actually worked in some places and not all balloons were found.
If they can catch the people responsible they should pour gas on them and set them on fire!! There have been lives lost in this not just property! They should make it a capitol offense if lives are lost in cases of arson!
Just my 2cents, It makes me mad when some idiot does something like this and they catch them and do nothing to them!!

Over 10,000 Balloon Bombs were launched (into the Jet Stream). About 10% landed all over the Pacific Northwest. In 1956, a family out camping found one...it went off killing them all. These are the only deaths reported.
The first San Diego fire started as the result of a failed line transformer on a power pole out in East county. Once the fire starts the winds take care of spreading it, some times over the course of miles. I did hear about an arsonist starting fires but I believe that he was up the coast around LA. We (San Diego) did have our first case of looting the other night...2 18 year old kids took some beers out of a refrig in an evacuated house!
I have lived here since 1968 when I left Ohio and joined the Navy. It was a culture shock for me because it seemed that the West coast folks had no roots like we did in the Midwest. As it turns out having roots is not what binds people and communities, it's so much more than that...it's a genuine caring for others and willingness to pitch in times of need. New Yorkers showed their colors in 9/2001 and SoCal folks are doing it today!
I have all of the large Welding Tanks, about 10ea. 20lb. tanks of Propane and Gasoline tied up to a tree away from the house. Probably makes me look like the Unibomber...
Dawgie
Dawg, if you are AT ALL in a possible path of the fire, please, release all the propane and acetyline from the tanks...I have experience with this!!
You would hate yourself forever, if there were any firefighters around, when one exploded, trying to protect your house!!
It's a small price to pay, if your house is totally safe, and too high a price to pay should something happen!!
It happens in an instant...Please, don't wait until the last moments, if it should come to that.
Thanks for your concern. You can't always convey what is really happening in these threads so I can understand what you mean. I purposely placed the stuff far from the house in the open where it is seen easily by the authorities. That was the intent. The F.D. has driven by it several times and have seen it. If things get dicey, we'll take care of business.

Cool. I lived in San Diego/North County from 1963 until 1988. Saw many fires. I know that they can suddenly appear, out of no where, in a moments notice. Not sure how far they are from you. But I do know the devastating effect an exploding cylinder can do. It's like a grenade, times 1000. That's my concern.
Valley center - do you by chance know Aleta Pharris?
When I started this thread I was a bit hesitant. It's "off topic" and who the heck cares about San Diego nonsense anyway? I had no idea it would get this bad and become national news.
One correction 560,000 (not 1 million) were evacuated and some are allowed to go back.
I'm starting my 3rd sleepless night and I'll be alone. The family is safe 60 miles north. There is this enormous fire east of me about 7 miles. In the daytime the wind blows the fire at me and everybody is puckered up. In the evening, the wind reverses (on shore) and slows the progress but everyone east puckers up. If the wind shifts at night while you are sleeping, it can run 7 miles in 30 minutes. I'm almost ready to Rambo - Drive my F-150 Lariat into the Fire with Extinguishers blazing
Just want to say thanks to everyone. I'd rather talk about Truck stuff but you are all really great and I appreciate your concern.
Now let's drink frosties and argue about 48-52 Grilles and Darkside !
Thanks havi, many of the folks who had to evacuate use a similar technique...they call their home phone number to see if the answering machine still picks up. Not very high-tech but it gives them some amount of hope when they hear the machine come on. As for me, I work for the USMC at Camp Pendleton...we have been on stand down now for the last 3 days so I have had a lot of time to get caught up around the house. Can't go outside for long because of the smoke but inside with the A/C running it's not too bad. Not sure how the fires at the base are going to look tomorrow AM but I am planning on going back into the office anyway.

Dawg-A-Roo
Hey man, the people come first! There can hardly be any kind of meaningful arguement if there are no misguided 51/52 guys around.
